Hey John — I have a story that I will never, ever forget, so I thought I’d share it with you and leave you with something positive as you enjoy your weekend.

Last year, I was driving from Newark down to Washington D.C. when all of a sudden, there was a serious accident right in front of us. A truck hit a car and slammed it up against the median.

We jumped out and immediately ran over to the smoking truck. My first instinct was, “I need to get this man out of this car.” I was able to help him climb out of the passenger side and get him to my car so I could make sure he was okay.

I noticed that a guy on the other side had stopped. I thought he just wanted to ask whether everything was okay, but he looked at me and said he was an EMT. He then jumped over the median and started tending to the man in the car.

All of a sudden, people started coming from seemingly all directions. The first person who stopped was a guy who worked for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority — and the next thing I knew, people of all different backgrounds had stopped.

White people. Black people. There was a Turkish immigrant and an Orthodox Jew. And looking at the bumper stickers of the folks there, I pretty much assumed that there were both Republicans and Democrats there.

Those lines that divide us were, in that moment, clearly not as great as the ties that bind us together.

I stood there as everyone worked together, John, and it made me feel proud — proud of New Jersey and proud of the fact that there are people all over America every day who do this kind of work.

I know how tough American highways are. It’s one of the reasons I’ve worked on highway safety.

I found myself going around and talking to folks on the scene, like the 21-year-old volunteer firefighter and the chief who thanked me for my support for the SAFER grant program that helped pay for some of the first responders’ equipment.

This was all happening as hundreds of thousands of Americans across our country were gathering to watch an eclipse. When my team and I got back to our car, we paused, pulled out our glasses, and joked about missing it.

The next thing I know, I’m looking up and I’m seeing it. And what was really cool was that my staff member — always trying to evidence one of our core values of kindness — had given one of the state troopers her glasses so that he could also look up and see this rare, cosmic event.

The eclipse was rare, but what was affirmed to me on this day is that in our nation, all across our country, every single day, kindness and service and grace to those in need are not rare.

There are so many people who dedicate their lives to helping others. And for that, John, I feel grateful.

With love and gratitude,

Cory
