These rallies have unlocked so many large, transcendent, roaring moments —
the kind that are only possible when thousands of people come together.

And yet it is the quiet moments, tucked in between the vibrating rafters
and packed venues, that have contained their own unique gifts that I will
also treasure forever.

This past week we visited Bakersfield, California — home of countless
immigrant farmworkers that feed our nation — when none other than the
Dolores Huerta walked into the room.

Afterwards, she came by and we shared a quiet moment and conversation. I
got to hold her hand, and thank her for her fight for working people, for
Latinos, for women, and for so many others.

To me, it is a source of comfort and hope to know that all that we work
for now is built upon all that has come before us.

We are not the first nor the last to hold the candle, but are part of a
long heritage of brave people who have chosen to fight for and build a
better world.
