In 2017, after Donald Trump was elected President and pushed for a Muslim ban, I knew I needed to step up. I needed to use my voice to help every Virginian who felt voiceless in the face of Trump’s extremism and hate.

So, in 2019, even though I was the underdog, I ran and won -- flipping a crucial State Senate seat and giving Democrats the majority we needed to pass an unapologetically progressive agenda.

That was my way of telling this “jackass” in Washington that I, as a Muslim, woman, and an immigrant — all the things that he tried to demonize — I’m going to win this damn seat in the heart of the confederacy.
