Yesterday, I signed an executive directive to make sure Michigan is ready to respond to Republican-proposed cuts to Medicaid.

Medicaid covers *2.6 million* people statewide including:


* *1 million* kids
* *170,000* seniors
* *300,000* people with disabilities

Thanks to Medicaid, survivors of breast cancer can afford annual mammograms, more families than ever can get dental care or visit a primary care physician, and parents can focus on getting their sick kid to the ER instead of worrying about the bill. 

*In short, Medicaid saves lives and lowers costs.*

Right now, Republicans in DC are trying to terminate access to health care by slashing *$880 billion* from Medicaid, so they can deliver a *$4 trillion* tax cut, primarily for the rich. If this goes into effect, the cost of health care will go up for every single American. Here in Michigan, up to *750,000* people could lose access to health care. The cuts will hit even harder in small towns and rural Michigan where *37%* of residents are covered by Medicaid.

That's why I'm proud to support access to Medicaid in our state by signing an executive directive. We are sending a clear message to anyone trying to trade your health care for someone else’s tax cut: *Medicaid is not for sale.* 

I’ll keep fighting to lower the cost of health care and support your access to critical programs like Medicaid. Because here in Michigan, getting sick shouldn't mean going broke.

*It’s important Michigan is prepared to fight the proposed Medicaid cuts with facts.*

That’s why yesterday, I signed an executive order supporting health care access for Michigan families. It orders the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) to review the proposed federal cuts to Medicaid and prepare a report identifying the specific impact the cuts will have on people’s health and their access to care.

Here in Michigan, I won’t stop fighting to lower the cost of health care and expand access to quality, affordable care.

*Here’s what we’re doing to expand access to health care in Michigan:*


* When I was in the Michigan Legislature, I worked across the aisle to establish the bipartisan Healthy Michigan Plan, Michigan’s expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act that now covers hundreds of thousands of people.
* As governor, I signed bipartisan legislation enshrining cost-saving provisions of the Affordable Care Act into state law, including requirements for preventative care, protections for preexisting conditions, and allowing children to stay on their parents’ plans until they turn 26.
* I signed bipartisan legislation requiring insurance providers to offer equal coverage for mental health and substance use disorder treatments.

*Here’s what we’re doing to lower the cost of quality health care in Michigan:*


* Everyone agrees there is waste in government that should be cut. With our partners at MDHHS, we are addressing these problems in Michigan’s Medicaid system without reckless cuts.
* In my 2025 State of the State Address, I committed to working across the aisle to reduce medical debt so being sick or getting hurt doesn’t also mean being broke.
* We zeroed out premiums for MIChild, insurance for children in poverty.
