It’s no big secret that the public’s trust in government has been eroding for a long time. For decades, we’ve heard stories of politicians exploiting their position for personal gain, and then facing no consequences for their actions.

That’s why I’ve made it a priority to clean up Washington and make sure our government actually serves the people we represent. In fact, I was an early backer of the plan to ban members of Congress from trading individual stocks, even when many members of Democratic leadership were against it.

It’s not complicated: Members of Congress should be working for the people, not themselves or special interests. We have extraordinary access to non-public information that can impact the stock market, and using that information to personally profit is just wrong.

I understand that I am in a position of public trust. Thousands of Kansans placed their faith in me to advocate for their interests, not my own. And I don’t take that fundamental responsibility lightly.

I believe the standards for members of Congress should be higher, not lower. Now, I’m working to make that higher standard the law of the land, because part of making our government work means restoring the public’s trust in Congress.
