Hi John,
Welcome to the latest New Pennsylvania Project newsletter!
This past weekend, we were horrified to learn that Governor Shapiro and his family were targets of an arson attack. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Governor Shapiro made ([link removed] his first public comments since the attack at the Governor’s Residence early Sunday morning: "This is not how we resolve our differences, and this is not okay. This level of violence has to end, and it has to be roundly condemned by everyone, both political parties, people from all different walks of life. It’s not okay."
While the headlines have been focusing on the damage to his home, the real question is: What kind of world are we actually building?
No residence, title, or security detail can protect us from the truth: Our systems are burning -- literally and metaphorically.
And it’s not just about one house. It’s about all of us.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. popularized the idea of the Beloved Community – a global vision of a world free of discrimination, injustice, and violence. The Beloved Community isn't about saving the elite while the rest of us fend for scraps. It’s about tearing down the walls that divide us and building something rooted in justice.
Yes, this event is tragic. It is unfortunate. But maybe it is also a wake-up call.
It is time to stop patching up broken systems and start imagining something better, together.
Our votes are the first step for achieving that.

The $0 boycott that might give you MORE energy rather than drain it.
After 2 years, redirecting my attention has become the foundation for all other resistance—and often costs nothing.
Our minutes = their millions. Every algorithm view and targeted ad funds the systems we’re fighting. This isn’t about perfection (I still love binges & a good scroll sesh ). It’s about becoming less useful to empire and more present for each other.
The tools that help me and more avails in the “Anti-Capitalist Tools” board linked in bio .

Trump is a step closer to openly defying the courts and deporting people without due process. Due process include notice of deportation and the opprotunity to contest it before it happens.
In case you missed it, due to an “administrative error,” the Trump regime has deported Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia to a dangerous and violent mega-prison in El Salvador. According to the New York Times ([link removed] Garcia is a 29-year-old father of three, living in Maryland with protected legal status.
Here’s what’s happening: The U.S. Supreme Court has unanimously determined that the government must “facilitate” his return to the United States. However, Trump is indicating that he has no intention of following this order. Instead, he has allied himself with President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador, who self-describes himself as the world’s “coolest dictator.” Bukele has stated, “Of course I’m not going to do it,” when asked if he will return Garcia home.
Stephen Vladeck, a law professor at Georgetown University, explains that “the idea that ‘the government can disappear people to a foreign country with no due process and no responsibility for what happens next’” amounts to “a rule-of-law crisis.”
If Trump gets away with sending someone, regardless of their citizenship status, to a foreign prison without recourse, the impact could be devastating. This is made abundantly clear as he has floated the idea of sending American citizens “convicted of violent crimes” to the prison in El Salvador. His Attorney General, Pam Bondi, is allegedly studying the proposal.
Judge James Boasberg, a federal judge in the District of Columbia, ruled that there was probable cause to believe the government was in criminal contempt of court for disobeying the Judge's order that it stop deporting people who had been denied due process -- that is notice and an opportunity to contest the deportation -- before those flights took off.
Judge Boasberg explains why a contempt finding is essential ([link removed] when a party disobeys a court order: “The rule ‘reflects a belief that in the fair administration of justice no man can be judge in his own case,’ no matter how ‘exalted his station’ or ‘righteous his motives.’… The Constitution does not tolerate willful disobedience of judicial orders — especially by officials of a coordinate branch who have sworn an oath to uphold it.”
As the Trump regime works to chip away at our democracy and push us closer to a constitutional crisis, it has never been more critical that our state and federal courts remain fair and independent. The independence of the judiciary should be protected – especially from the executive branch.
This November, voters will have the power to retain or vacate three seats of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
The votes cast by powerful Pennsylvania voters in November will impact our lives for years to come, as Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court will make decisions about our election administration, access to abortion, the safety of our workplaces, and the right to unionize. Make sure you can voice your vote!
Here is a list of all the judges up for retention elections in PA ([link removed] this year.
We have a new podcast! And the second episode airs next Thursday, April 24!
Slingshot The Podcast ([link removed] — where the misunderstood voice becomes the culture’s power is hosted by our Founding CEO, Kadida Kenner, and Charles Gregory, from We Talk Weekly. The first episode dives headfirst into a conversation many are afraid to have: What’s the problem with DEI?
In the premiere episode, “Damn, I Don’t Want DEI in the Title,” the hosts confront how diversity, equity, inclusion—and access have been politicized, misrepresented, and misunderstood. But they don’t stop there.
Through storytelling, humor, and cultural commentary, they uplift powerful examples of Black excellence in sports that challenge stereotypes and demand visibility.

On Wednesday, 50 people took the oath of citizenship from Judge Courtney Powell at the Dauphin County courthouse in Harrisburg during the county’s naturalization ceremony.
The new citizens came from 17 countries. Staff members from the affiliated organization New PA Project Education Fund (NPPEF) were present to help the new citizens register to vote.
In order to be eligible to vote in Pennsylvania, people must have established residence or became citizens at least 30 days before the election. This means that anyone who moves to Pennsylvania or becomes a citizen by Saturday, April 19th can register to vote in time to participate in the primary election on Tuesday, May 20th. York County

It is a scary time in America. Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility ([link removed] (SAVE) act bill, which would require prospective voters to show proof of U.S. citizenship in order to register to vote. It is now headed to the Senate.
Senator Fetterman and McCormick have both sent responses to constituents on their current stance on the SAVE act bill. The responses can be found below.
Fetterman’s letter: Fetterman Letter.jpeg ([link removed]
McCormick’s letter: McCormick Letter.jpeg ([link removed]
This bill is VOTER SUPPRESSION and if f it becomes law, this bill would disenfranchise millions of eligible voters, especially immigrants, Black and brown communities, married women, and young people.
Democracy works when everyone has access to the ballot. Let’s protect that.
Calling your reps only takes a few minutes, but can have huge impact!
You can do your part by calling our senators and asking them to protect our voting rights by voting NO on this bill, You can even use this script:
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: This bill would enact a 21st-century poll tax by stripping the fundamental right to vote from more than 21 million eligible Americans who can’t produce, don’t have, can’t afford, or struggle to access the required documents. The government has what it needs to determine eligibility, and this only serves to discourage people from voting and allow Elon Musk to comb through our voter files and access our private information.
Speaking of taxes, all U.S. residents had to submit theirs on Tuesday, April 15th. Did you know that many people without legal status pay billions in taxes, filing under tax identification numbers?
The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy estimates that undocumented immigrants paid $96.7 billion in federal, state and local taxes in 2022. For months, IRS officials have resisted disclosing what has long been guarded information, but now, the IRS will share this info with ICE ([link removed]
This could be a slippery slope. Remember when deportations were ONLY going to be of undocumented criminals? As we saw with Armando Abrego Garcia, due process is not happening. Plus we now know of cases of green card holders in detention, and this week the White House confirmed Trump is thinking about sending US citizens to prisons in El Salvador ([link removed]
When is enough, enough? We remember Fannie Lou Hamer's statement: "No one is free until everyone is free," which is more relevant today than ever.
Happy Easter from NPP!
Just as Easter symbolizes new beginnings, civic education empowers individuals to shape their communities through knowledge, engagement, and action for a better future.
Wishing those who celebrate a joyful and meaningful Easter!
