Yesterday marked a historic moment. Google lost a critical antitrust case in a landmark decision affirming what we've reported on tirelessly for years: the monopolistic power of tech giants in our digital economy is real and harmful, but also preventable.

At The American Prospect, we've long sounded the alarm about the unchecked power of companies like Google and Facebook. In 2019, we exposed the intricate, opaque mechanisms of digital advertising monopolies, revealing how two corporations dominated an entire industry by controlling 60 percent of a then $129 billion market. We detailed how their model of surveillance capitalism not only eroded competition but threatened democracy itself.

The author of that piece, Dina Srinivasan, went on to advise states in a case challenging Google’s power in digital advertising. The Biden Justice Department borrowed many arguments from that case in filing its own lawsuit. And yesterday, a judge agreed with the government that Google is a monopolist.

The verdict isn't just validation for our journalism, it's proof of the impact that reader-supported, independent journalism can have on shaping a fairer, more just world. This victory belongs to you, too, because our journalism is powered by your support. Without your contributions, this investigation and others like it wouldn't see the light of day.

Yesterday’s ruling demonstrates that independent journalism isn't just about reporting the truth, it's about driving change. When we expose abuses of power and clarify complex issues, we empower communities and policymakers to act. Together, we constitute a broader movement dedicated to restoring accountability, transparency, and fairness in our society.

Entrenched power can be challenged, monopolies can be held accountable, and independent, reader-powered journalism can lead the way. But we can’t rest now. To keep reporting these stories, we need you.

We’re going to need more of this type of reporting and analysis as we barrel ahead into dark and dangerous times. We not only need to report on the lawlessness and corruption of the Trump administration and the corrosive effects of concentrated corporate power, but also envision a better, more just, and more equitable future. You’re building that future right alongside us. When you become a part of our community of readers and thinkers, you’re making a real difference in creating what comes next.

We cannot do this without you.

Can you join us today? Your donation ensures that we remain free to investigate deeply, challenge boldly, and advocate fiercely for the public interest. Your support helps maintain a vibrant community committed to democracy, transparency, and fairness.

Let's celebrate this victory and continue building on this momentum. Together, we have the power to shape a better future.
Thank you for believing in our work and being a crucial part of this fight.
