John,
I’ll cut to the chase: There’s a breakdown happening between the Trump administration and the judiciary, which could be building toward a constitutional crisis.
Last week, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the United States must facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia — a Maryland man wrongly deported to El Salvador. But there’s been defiance from the administration.
Our Founders created a system to reject the whims of tyrants and ensure that the rule of law was the cornerstone of American government. The behavior we’ve seen from the administration is tipping into lawless territory and leading folks to seriously question if this could happen to anyone — U.S. citizen or legal immigrant.
Add your name to tell Congress to stand up and speak out against this flagrant disregard for the rule of law and our system of checks and balances, and to fight and protect the folks around the country that they represent.
The escalating tensions between the administration and the judiciary over the return of Abrego Garcia raise serious concerns for us at Issue One [1] because of the open disregard of the balance of powers laid out in our Constitution.
We at Issue One are working day in and day out to defend the Constitution and ensure our nation’s norms are upheld. Because if these actions are left unchecked, there’s a risk that our institutions are destabilized and this behavior becomes normalized.
We’re fighting because the rule of law isn’t optional — it’s essential to our democracy.
Our collective voices are so needed in moments like this. We need to show Congress that we want them to do something about bringing Abrego Garcia home, but to also stand up for the rule of law and protect the values and norms laid out in our Constitution. Add your name to show Congress that you demand action.
Thanks for standing with us,
Alix Fraser Vice President of Advocacy
