On Monday, the City Council voted to move forward with a public hearing on June 9 to consider adopting a trash fee and associated services. If you own a single-family property, you will receive a confirmation postcard noting the proposed fee and how to protest. Note, the proposed fee is the highest fee the council can adopt, but a lower fee is also a possibility. I have heard your concerns at my town halls and in numerous conversations. Your input is essential as I work with the mayor and my colleagues to right-size operations with competitive rates ahead of final adoption.

SUPPORTING THE ARTS

I am pleased to support 9 organizations with FY25 Arts, Culture, and Community Festivals (ACCF) funding. Arts and culture are central to strong communities, encouraging creativity, connection, and a deeper understanding of shared experiences. This funding helps ensure that these programs continue to grow and thrive.

SPRING CLEANING

Tax season is the perfect time to get organized—and that includes securely disposing of old tax documents. City of San Diego residents can head to the Miramar Recycling Center now through April 22 to shred a limit of one banker’s box of documents per person or household for free. Have a shredder at home? You can also recycle bagged, shredded paper in your blue bin to be picked up. ♻️

PRELIMINARY BUDGET RELEASED

The Mayor released the Draft FY 2026 Budget this week. What are the next steps? First, the Mayor will present the draft to the City Council in a public hearing on Monday, April 21. Then, the Budget Review Committee will hold a series of hearings from May 5 to 9, including one 6:00 PM evening meeting. On May 14, the Mayor is anticipated to release a series of revisions to the draft budget, the so-called “May Revise.” This culminates with the Council taking final action on June 10. Now is the time to engage with City Hall to advocate for the services, programs, and projects important to you.

75 YEARS OF SERVICE

City Council celebrated Father Joe’s Villages for their 75 years of service to our unhoused community. We recognized their transformative impact in providing housing, healthcare, and paths to self-sufficiency, making San Diego a more compassionate and resilient city.
