I want you to know what I’m fighting for in this year’s state budget

John,

I wanted to give you an update on our budget negotiations in Albany and our fight to make New York safer, more affordable, and more livable for you and your family.

New Yorkers all across the state have told me they desperately need a bit more money in their pockets. That’s why my budget would create the state’s first-ever inflation refund, provide a sweeping middle-class tax cut, triple the child tax credit, and make school meals free, making it easier for working families to get ahead.

But if New Yorkers don't feel safe on our streets, on subways, or in their communities, then nothing else matters. While we’ve made progress, with crime down and gun violence reaching its lowest point on record, I know there is more work to do.

That’s why I proposed $370 million to fight gun violence and other investments to make New York safer. I’m also fighting to end the revolving door of criminals having cases thrown out due to minor technicalities. Our budget will make common sense changes to the law to ensure both defendants and victims of crime receive justice, and violent criminals don’t end up back on the streets.

When it comes to protecting the most vulnerable among us, our mental health system has failed too many. Many New Yorkers have experienced seeing a friend, family member, or other members of the community who are simply unable to take care of themselves due to the mental health issues they’re facing. Our budget is going to help make sure these individuals get the care and support they need.

People who have experienced severe mental illness first hand support the changes we’re seeking, like Julie, who believes her daughter Alix may still be with us today if these changes had come sooner. And New Yorkers agree: There is nothing compassionate about letting people suffer on our streets and subways.

Every policy in my budget – including actions to create distraction-free classrooms for our kids, enact free community college for adults entering high-demand fields, and make it easier for New Yorkers to buy their first home – is focused on making life better for you and your family.

We need to pass a budget that makes life more affordable for New Yorkers, closes loopholes in our discovery laws, and helps those with severe mental health challenges get the treatment they need.

Let’s get it done.
