Each year, I reach out during Black Maternal Health Week to bring attention to a crisis that continues to devastate our communities.
Black women are
three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. In states with aggressive abortion bans,
maternal mortality is rising, especially for women of color. And
more women in America are dying from pregnancy-related causes than women in any other developed nation.
This is a national emergency. We can’t afford silence. We can’t afford inaction. And we can't afford the cuts to health care that Trump, Musk, and the GOP are proposing.
We owe it to every Black mother to enact meaningful reforms and ensure access to high-quality prenatal and maternal care for all. Add your name today:
In Washington state, Apple Health (Medicaid) is a lifeline for thousands of Black mothers and children. But right now, it’s under threat. Proposed cuts by the federal government would gut the very programs that Black mothers rely on for care, support, and survival.
These decisions have life-or-death consequences. Instead of slashing care, we should be expanding access to providers who understand and reflect the communities they serve.
That’s why I’m calling on Congress to do more: protect and expand Apple Health (Medicaid) coverage, invest in culturally competent care, and protect every person’s right to make their own healthcare decisions.
