Dear Constituent,

Donald Trump promised to protect Social Security while he was running for president and – in what should come as no surprise – he has not stood true to his word.

He and Elon Musk have plans already unfolding to decimate the Social Security Administration (SSA) and force our seniors and disabled workers to have sleepless nights – fearful for how they will get their earned benefits.

Rep. Mfume delivers impassioned remarks at a rally supporting federal workers, alongside Sen. Chris Van Hollen, Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (Both D-MD), Rep. Sarah Elfreth (D-MD-03), and Rep. Johnny Olszewski (D-MD-02) outside of the Social Security Administration HQ in Baltimore (February 10, 2025).

On February 28th, 24 senior staffers at SSA stepped down as Musk and Trump’s Acting Commissioner of Social Security unveiled a ploy to consolidate regional offices and cut 7,000 workers.

Then, on March 19th, the Associated Press released a report spotlighting 47 SSA offices listed for closure, including 26 with anticipated closures this year.

Considering the headquarters for the Social Security Administration is located right here, in the Baltimore community of Woodlawn, this Administration's actions are a personal and direct attack on our friends and neighbors who make up the approximately 9,763 Marylanders that work for SSA.

Let me be frank – devastating the workforce at SSA and closing field offices will mean the delay, disruption, and denial of benefits.

Approximately 70 million Americans, including 133,460 recipients in Maryland's 7th Congressional District, depend on the Social Security Administration to fulfill their earned benefits.

In the Congress, I am standing with these 70 million Americans who rely on Social Security by backing legislation and letters to curtail these shameful attacks, including:

  • The Keeping Our Field Offices Open Act (H.R. 1876) which stops Trump and Musk from closing any SSA field or hearing office for the remainder of the Administration.

  • The Protecting Americans’ Social Security Data Act (H.R.
1877) which would stop special government employees and political appointees, including Musk and his DOGE cronies, from accessing SSA databases containing sensitive information.

  • Joining a letter sent to Acting SSA Commissioner Leland Dudek on March 3, 2025, demanding a halt to Trump-Musk’s plan to gut Social Security.

Rest assured, this is just a snapshot of my legislative work to fight back against the foolishness coming out of this Administration.

No matter if it is at a rally, a committee hearing, or through my legislative work – my stance on Trump-Musk’s plan to gut Social Security will not sway:

Hands off our Social Security, Elon Musk and Donald Trump!

Sincerely,
