Dear Friend,
Today is Tax Day! Don’t forget to file your taxes before midnight.
And don’t forget to take this important and high impact action: SIGN our letter telling Congress to prioritize families over billionaires!
I know that few of us celebrate Tax Day but another way to think about it is the day we contribute to the programs that fuel our families and economies—our tax dollars go to the roads we drive on, the schools our children are educated in, the medical research that saves lives, and the farmers that feed the world. Or at least that is how it is supposed to work!
Unfortunately this year is different because Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress are trying to push through a tax package that gives $4.5 trillion to billionaires and mega-corporations and pays for those tax cuts by slashing our health care, nutrition assistance, public schools, and child care. [1] This is NOT ok. Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk don’t need another yacht or vacation home, but our families do need health care and schools.
As Donald Trump is busy tanking our economy over a tariff war, Republicans in Congress are trying to play a game of “who can hurt American families more” with their proposed cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, Head Start, public schools, Social Security and other vital programs.
The Republican plan hurts our families and our economy: 70% of the benefits from the Republican tax plan go to the richest households and tax cuts for the rich never “trickle down” into broader economic gains. [2] Trump and Republicans in Congress will use any excuse to give their billionaire friends and donors more tax cuts —but the reality is tax cuts for the rich will do nothing to dig us out of the hole that Trump’s disastrous economic and tariff policies have created.
Moreover, Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress are also planning to use our Medicaid dollars to pay for between $90 billion and $175 billion of spending to fund their mass deportation agenda, including a massive expansion of family detention. [3]
It’s not too late to stop this disastrous plan! We have already had a lot of success slowing down the process because of so much Republican infighting. [4] We can reverse this decline by making sure families have the tools and opportunities they need to get ahead and grow the economy, not taking money from them to give the rich tax cuts. This means advancing policies related to the care economy–health care, including Medicaid and Medicare, child care and Head Start, care for the aging and people with disabilities, paid family and medical leave, an expanded Child Tax Credit, and strong public schools.
Together we can make our economy stronger, our tax code fairer, and the future brighter for our families.
