Folks,
2025 is shaping up to see another crucial fight for fair representation in Ohio.
As you read this, the state’s lawmakers are getting ready for another mid-decade redraw of its congressional map. But how did we get here?
Ohio has a long history of politicians adopting maps without bipartisan support. This is how bad it’s gotten: The Ohio Supreme Court has struck down these gerrymandered legislative maps five times and their congressional maps twice. Because Republicans passed their most recent maps without Democratic support, they’re required to pass a new map before the 2026 midterms.
Last November, voters had the opportunity to create an independent, citizen-led redistricting commission to fix this. But partisan forces and outside interests spent millions to sabotage the ballot initiative, and it fell short of passage. Now, the state faces another redraw of the congressional map under the same system Republicans have used to lock in their majorities and deprive voters of fair representation.
But this doesn’t just affect voters in Ohio — it could have national implications. If left unchecked, Ohio Republicans could once again pass an extreme, gerrymandered map ahead of the midterm elections to try to give Republicans more opportunities to unfairly gain congressional seats. With the majority in the U.S. House down to just a handful of seats, they’re desperate to hold on to control. That’s not how any of this should work — voters should decide who represents them and which party gets to lead. No one should be allowed to skew the maps to dampen the voice of the people.
The NDRC has identified Ohio as one of our top-priority states this year. We’re working to prevent an egregious Republican power grab. And we need the support of grassroots donors like you to help.
