Friend — This is a story about fascism under Donald Trump. I hope you’ll read to the end.

Kilmar Abrego García is a husband and father from Maryland. Last month, he was abducted by ICE despite having legal residency status in the US.

He was given no due process, and like hundreds of others he was accused of being a gang member with no evidence — an accusation that the Trump administration used to justify his illegal deportation to a mega-prison in El Salvador.

Now Kilmar finds himself in a foreign prison where torture, violence, and slave-labor is common, despite committing no crimes and following all the right steps to stay in the US legally.

Last week, the Supreme Court ruled that Kilmar was wrongly deported and that the Trump administration must return him to the US. But the Trump administration is flat out refusing to obey that order and bring Kilmar home.

Friend, I know fascism can sound like a buzzword sometimes. But this is what fascism is in practice.

Someone can be snatched up off the streets, given no hearing or chance to prove it was a mistake, sent to a foreign prison, and be refused their return even when it's ordered by a federal court.

If they can do this to Kilmar, they can do this to anybody. Just yesterday Trump sat in the Oval Office and admitted he would like to start deporting American citizens to El Salvador as well.

I’m reminded of one of the most famous poems about the rise of the Nazis in Germany:

“First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”
Well, it’s our responsibility to be the ones to speak out, right here, right now. Because this erosion of due process and the rule of law will affect everyone, regardless of your citizenship or immigration status.

I’m doing everything I can in Congress to hold this administration accountable, but the truth is it’s going to take a massive popular movement of people of all backgrounds coming together to defend our democracy from fascists like Donald Trump.

If you want to be a contributing part of that movement, you can use this link or the button below to chip in and power our organizing.

We live in a democracy, not a dictatorship. That means the people get the final say. Americans voted in Trump and the GOP, and they're already getting buyer’s remorse after three months of chaos and authoritarianism.

Let’s keep up the pressure and lay the groundwork for victory against these fascists in 2026 and beyond.

In solidarity with everyone fighting back today,

Ilhan Omar
