STUDENT LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAM APPLICATIONS FOR FY25
To ensure educators can benefit from the financial assistance made possible by the student loan repayment program, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is currently accepting applications for the Fiscal Year (FY) 25 Student Loan Repayment Program through May 19, 2025. This year, individual school staff members must apply directly for the program, using the link found on the Student Loan Repayment Program webpage. Once applications have been received from individuals and processed by MDE staff, districts will verify employment details under the updated eligibility requirements in statute (MCL 388.1627k).
As before, all eligible program participants receive payments equal to their actual monthly student loan payments under federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), up to a maximum of $200 per month (or $400 per month if their employer is located in an area in Band 6 of the Opportunity Index, as described in MCL 388.1631a, at the time of application).
Please prepare if you intend to apply for the Student Loan Repayment Program. An incomplete, incorrect, or inaccurate application will not be processed. Here’s what is needed from you:
- Make sure you meet the updated eligibility requirements for the Student Loan Repayment Program.
- Make sure your loans are current and actively paid under PSLF, under an income-driven loan or repayment plan, if applicable. Please note that if your loans are not considered active under PSLF at the time of application, your application will not be processed.
- Create screenshots or electronic scans of your current PSLF status and your loan payment history in advance, including the amount of your next monthly payment. You will need to upload these with your application.
- You can apply for payments back to October 1, 2024, but remember—your uploaded loan history documents must show all payments for all months you are eligible and applying for.
- Make sure your screenshots or electronic scans are in .jpg, .gif, or .pdf formats only; all other formats will not be processed.
- We encourage you to stay informed by visiting the Student Loan Repayment Program webpage to access resources and technical assistance and the most up-to-date information.
IMPORTANT: The FY24 and FY25 applications are considered separate because of the updated eligibility requirements. You must apply to be able to receive the FY25 payments, regardless of your participation status last year.
Remember, all application information, including the updated eligibility requirements, timeline, and instructions are currently available on the Student Loan Repayment Program webpage.
If you have questions about your PSLF status or how your federal loans work, please contact your student loan service provider or review information on www.studentaid.gov/pslf. For all other questions about the Student Loan Repayment Program, please contact [email protected].
