Tax Day is just around the corner—and with it, an important reminder: without action from Congress, Iowans could face one of the largest tax increases in American history.
Last August, I joined fellow members of the House Ways and Means Committee for a field hearing at the Iowa State Fair. We heard directly from Iowans about how the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) fueled growth for small businesses, farmers, and working families.
The numbers speak for themselves: a 16% tax cut for those earning under $100,000, a $5,000 boost in real median household income, and a doubling of both the Child Tax Credit and the standard deduction. These changes meant more money in the pockets of ordinary Iowans—and less red tape.
But this pro-growth, pro-family policy is at risk. If the TCJA expires, 88,000 families in Iowa’s First District could see their Child Tax Credit cut in half. More than 59,000 small businesses could be hit with a 43.4% tax rate. Nearly 17,000 family farms would once again face the death tax—threatening the ability to keep the farm in the family. We cannot let that happen.
That’s why I’m fighting to extend these tax cuts and make them permanent. I’m a proud cosponsor of the Main Street Tax Certainty Act, which would permanently extend the 20% small business deduction. Small businesses are the heart of rural Iowa and our economy, and they deserve predictability and fairness.
At the field hearing, we also heard powerful testimony from Iowans like Sarah Curry, a mom who used the TCJA’s expanded Child Tax Credit to afford speech therapy for her child. And Jolene Riessen, a corn farmer who explained how immediate expensing helped her purchase a much-needed combine. These are real stories—not partisan talking points.
In addition, I support ending federal taxes on tips and ensuring Social Security benefits aren’t unfairly taxed. These commonsense reforms put hardworking Iowans and Americans first.
President Trump is committed to renewing these vital, commonsense tax policies. I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to stand with Iowa’s families—not Washington bureaucrats. Let’s protect working families and small businesses, preserve family farms, and ensure Iowa continues to feed and power the world.
Let’s make tax season less painful—and ensure Washington never forgets who it works for: you.
