In 2018, I ran for Congress in a district that had elected just one Democrat in the last 50 years. I had never held elected office before, but after witnessing Donald Trump’s attempts to rip away affordable health care, give massive tax handouts to billionaires, and ignore the rule of law, I knew I had to take action.

National pundits thought I wouldn’t stand a chance. They believed there was no way a state like Kansas would ever vote for an LGBTQ+ Native American woman who was raised by a single Army mom and worked multiple jobs to pay her own way through school. But that November, we flipped this seat and proved the pundits wrong.

I’m proud we won that race. But most of all, I’m proud of what we’ve been able to do for the people of Kansas because of that victory.

Together, we’ve brought thousands of good-paying jobs to KS-03, enacted the most significant gun safety law in a generation, passed bipartisan legislation protecting same-sex marriage rights, and so much more.

But I also understand that the work is very much unfinished — and that the progress we worked so hard for has never been at greater risk. Today, Donald Trump and Elon Musk are posing a grave threat to our freedoms, our livelihoods, and the rule of law.

And National Republicans are going along with it. They’re working to pass every single part of Trump’s Project 2025 agenda, like slashing Medicaid and abolishing the Department of Education.

Make no mistake: These extreme politicians know what they’re doing is unpopular. They know that their actions will have devastating impacts on families and communities across the nation. They just don’t care — and that’s why I’m fighting back.

In Congress, I’m using every tool at my disposal to push back against their attacks on Social Security, Medicaid, abortion rights, public education, SNAP benefits, and more. And while I can’t promise that I’ll be able to stop every part of the National Republican agenda on my own, I can promise to vote NO on every piece of legislation that hurts Kansas families and never compromise on my values.

No matter what lies ahead in the future, you can count on me to stand up, speak out, and fight like hell on behalf of Kansas families — because that’s the kind of leadership our state desperately needs right now.
