Let’s be extremely clear: this is not about using the Death Master File to catch people claiming benefits on Social Security numbers of real dead people. The Social Security Administration has been doing that for years. Trump is claiming new powers to weaponize the Death Master File to declare living people dead in the eyes of our financial system.
This policy will not only create extreme hardship, but kill people. Imagine, in one Trump administration keystroke, losing your income, your health insurance, access to your bank account, your credit cards, your home, and more.
When Social Security incorrectly declares someone dead, it ruins their lives. In 2023, a Maryland woman was wrongly declared dead and found her health insurance and Social Security benefits terminated, her home listed for sale, her credit cards canceled, and her water shut off. Her health deteriorated as she spent endless hours trying to undo the mistake. Indeed, she did actually die seven months later.2
Once again, Elon Musk’s idea of “efficiency” involves Americans spending hours on hold trying to fight the bureaucracy to fix the mistakes Musk and his DOGE project created. This is the situation that Trump and Musk plan to intentionally place legal migrants in. With one million migrants becoming naturalized citizens every year, American citizens will surely fall victim as well. The Trump administration is reportedly doing this to make the lives of legal residents so unpleasant that they ‘self-deport.’ That would be bad enough, but the potential for further abuse is even more frightening.
Trump has already used Social Security as part of a political revenge plot on Maine’s governor that resulted in hours of unnecessary paperwork for Mainers having children. The bottom line is, Trump and Musk are already weaponizing Social Security―and this policy just super-charges those powers.
If they get away with this, it would be no surprise if they then move on to marking their perceived enemies as dead—citizens and non-citizens alike.
