Folks —
Last week, Donald Trump activated the United States military against American citizens, turning Washington D.C. into a battlefield where federal troops pointed weapons of war at American citizens.
Peaceful protestors and members of the media were tear-gassed and shot at with rubber bullets so the President and his top officials could take part in a photo op.
Blackhawk helicopters followed protesters while soldiers on the ground used tear gas – banned for use in warfare – on American citizens.
This is a sad and terrifying moment in our nation's history.
Even Trump’s former allies are speaking out. James Mattis, the esteemed Marine general who served as Trump’s secretary of defense, condemned Trump’s actions, writing:
“At home, we should use our military only when requested to do so, on very rare occasions, by state governors. Militarizing our response, as we witnessed in Washington, D.C., sets up a conflict — a false conflict — between the military and civilian society… Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people — does not even pretend to try. Instead he tries to divide us. We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership.”
Donald Trump’s actions are dangerous and un-American. They put American lives at risk.
We need him out of the White House so we can begin the work of coming together to heal and implement real changes in our justice system.
And if we don’t defeat President Trump on Election Day, this will become our new normal. Can we count on you to stand up and speak out against this blatant act of authoritarianism by chipping in what you can to help elect Democrats up and down the ballot this November?
To patriotic Americans peacefully exercising your First Amendment rights across the country: We hear you, we see you, and we stand with you.
P.S. I spoke with Andrea Mitchell today about my letter calling for the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate Attorney General William Barr for ordering the attack on peaceful protesters. You can watch the interview here.
