This week, I proudly voted to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, to restore public confidence in our election system and close loopholes that enable non-citizens to register to vote. Americans deserve to know their elections will be safe and secure when they go to the ballot box. 208 House Democrats voted against this commonsense legislation, and their opposition underscores why we need this bill — to provide a line of defense against any fraudulent effort to bolster Democrats’ voting bloc.
Under federal law, it is illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections, yet the National Voter Registration Act prohibits states from verifying US citizenship when individuals register to vote. The SAVE Act corrects this by simply allowing states to require proof of citizenship when individuals register, and giving states tools to remove non-citizens from their voter rolls. The SAVE Act also gives individuals SIX ways to verify their identity — including REAL IDs, passports, military and tribal records — ensuring all American citizens have access to their ballot. I was proud to cosponsor and champion this important legislation to ensure your fundamental right to free and fair elections is protected.
