Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians, 

In one of my first speeches, in my first year as mayor, I made a promise to DC: to bring a new, state-of-the-art hospital East of the River. This week, I am so proud to [ [link removed] ] deliver on that promise with Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health [ [link removed] ].

On Tuesday, April 15 at 12:01 a.m., Cedar Hill will officially open its doors, bringing world-class care to Ward 8 and to all Washingtonians. At Cedar Hill, residents will be able to deliver babies, receive a wide range of outpatient and behavioral health care, quickly access trauma care, and more.

Cedar Hill is an important example of what can happen when we bring public and private partners together to take on big challenges. With our partners at Universal Health Services, GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences and the GW Medical Faculty Associates, and Children’s National Hospital, we built a team dedicated to delivering excellent care. This is a world-class hospital for DC. And throughout the process, more than 500 Washingtonians worked on the project, including over 300 new hires from Wards 5, 7, and 8, and local businesses earned over $120 million. 

It took a village to deliver this new hospital, and I’m grateful for every person who played a role in getting it done.

This Sunday: DC Emancipation Day Parade, Festival, and Concert
Emancipation day

On Sunday, April 13, join Mayor Bowser and community members for the DC Emancipation Day parade and concert. This year marks the 20th anniversary of DC Emancipation Day as a District holiday.  

Hosted by Britt Waters of ABC 7News, the concert will feature musical performances by Anthony Hamilton, Chante Moore, Crank Crusaders ft. Raheem DeVaughn, Black Alley,* *Tim Bowman, Jr., DJ Kool, and the Washington Performing Arts Children of the Gospel Choir. There will be live radio broadcasts throughout the day, along with interactive activations and food trucks.

Spring Break with DPR

Students are encouraged to join a number of events taking place during “DPR Spring Break” — a week of fun, engaging activities from Saturday, April 12 through Saturday, April 19. DPR Spring Break, which coincides with DCPS Spring Break, will feature a wide range of free events across the District, including a skate party, a babysitting skills class, a teen brunch party, and much more.

Reminder: Trash Collection Slides for Veterans Day

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) will not collect household trash and recycling on DC Emancipation Day, on Wednesday, April 16. Trash and recycling collections will “slide” for the remainder of the week into Saturday. For example, households that normally receive trash and recycling collections on Wednesday will be serviced on Thursday. Collections on Monday and Tuesday will not be impacted and will operate as scheduled.
