[Your politics and policy brief for March 28, 2025]([link removed])
John-
This week, Speaker Mike Johnson appointed me as the leader of a new effort in Congress to combat the Mexican drug cartels which has been my top priority in recent years. The House also cleared a key legislative hurdle to advance President Trump’s agenda and we advanced what is perhaps the most commonsense piece of legislation ever passed by the House of Representatives (which Democrats, of course, voted against).
My primary is less than a year away. If I win my primary, I will be re-elected to another term in the House of Representatives where I can continue fighting for you.
But this will not be an easy fight - there are already multiple candidates who have announced they are challenging me. They are backed by Trump-hating consultants and millions of dollars in anti-Trump money. We cannot let them flood this race with resources unopposed, which is why I need your help.
If you can spare any contribution at all, it will go a long way to help me win this race. You can donate here:

A NEW EFFORT TO COMBAT THE CARTELS
[Chairman Crawford and Speaker Johnson Announce Creation of HPSCI Cartel Task Force]
[READ THE ANNOUNCEMENT HERE]([link removed])
As you know, combating the Mexican drug cartels has been my top priority in Congress for the last several years. Now, there is a new effort in Congress that will give our efforts an extra boost under President Trump.
Speaker Mike Johnson and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rick Crawford have created a new task force within the Intelligence Committee to combat the cartels, and appointed me as the leader of this effort.
The Cartel Task Force will support House Republicans’ efforts to build consensus with the U.S. Senate and the Trump Administration around identifying necessary legislative actions to combat the threat from the dangerous cartels in the Western Hemisphere involved in narcotics trafficking, human trafficking, the arms trade, and other illegal and destabilizing activities.
It is an honor to be entrusted by Speaker Johnson and Chairman Crawford with this position, and I remain as committed as ever to eliminating this grave threat to our country. With President Trump back in the White House, now is the time to act to ensure that the Administration has the tools and resources it needs to take the fight directly to the cartels that are ravaging our neighborhoods and killing American kids with fentanyl.
A BIG SET FORWARD IN ADVANCING THE TRUMP AGENDA

There was a major win in Congress this week for President Trump’s agenda.
The House cleared the way to extend President Trump’s tax cuts and prevent tax hikes. This vote kicks off reconciliation, which is critical to advancing the rest of President Trump’s agenda that he - and all Republicans - campaigned on.
There was an odd debate in the House of Representatives ahead of this vote. The usual suspects threatened to vote against it because it didn’t cut enough spending. To be clear: this doesn’t tie our hands to anemic budget cuts.
Republicans can still pursue $1.5 TRILLION in spending cuts—and that’s exactly what we’re going to do. The Senate set a baseline of $4 billion in cuts, which is why some members didn’t want to vote for it. But the baseline is exactly that - a baseline. The House will still lead the way and we will work to achieve the $1.5 trillion in savings that we promised voters.
THE MOST COMMONSENSE POLICY PASSES THE HOUSE
[Heres the Truth - SAVE Act doesnt stop women from voting]

Nearly 80% of Americans agree with voter ID and the basic notion that proof of citizenship should be required to vote in American elections. The House of Representatives followed the will of the American people this week, and passed commonsense legislation that would require states to verify that only American citizens are voting in their elections along with basic voter ID verification.
It is hard to imagine a more noncontroversial piece of legislation passing the House. This should have received unanimous, bipartisan support. But, of course, Democrats were against it. They even tried to push a lie that this bill somehow stopped women from voting and infringed on the voting rights of Americans.
It is an absurd lie, which I debunk in the video above. This is just another reminder that Democrats have learned nothing from the last election. Republicans will continue to stand for common sense. The left will continue to be against common sense. It’s just that simple.

[President Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 brought taxes down and simplified filings for the vast majority of Americans. It was the most pro-growth, pro-family tax reform in modern history. This week, Congress will vote on the first step to preventing those tax cuts from expiring. I’m proud to stand with @POTUS to keep taxes low and wages up.]([link removed])

[The cartels turned a rehab center into a warzone. Mexico’s Secretariat of Security, @OHarfuch , says the “Los Chapitos” faction of the Sinaloa cartel stormed a facility in Culiacán — killed 9, injured 5, and abducted the owner, Guillermo Rodríguez Gaxiola. He was later found dead. The targets were rival Sinaloa members loyal to “El Mayo” — part of an ongoing power struggle between El Chapo’s sons and his longtime partner. These are the same cartel thugs flooding American cities with fentanyl — killing over 80,000 Americans a year.]([link removed])
