the voters are tarrified
This last week has felt like a rollercoaster that none of us were tall enough to ride. Between tariffs on penguins ([link removed]) and the Trump administration basically using ChatGPT ([link removed]) to set their tariff policy, the stock market has been swinging harder than your suburban in-laws. If you looked at your 401k this week, you deserve compensation for emotional damages.
In our latest polling ([link removed]) with the Progressive Change Institute, we find that this story is breaking through to voters in a big way — an overwhelming majority of voters have heard “a lot” (52%) or “a little” (40%) about Trump’s tariffs, while just 8% have heard “nothing at all.”
A majority of voters (55%), including a majority of Independents (60%), also think Trump’s tariffs — or at least, the version of tariffs he put into place last week — will hurt Americans.

We’re not going to lie, Trump is starting to look a bit desperate out there. Begging other countries to call him ([link removed]) like he’s trying to get back together with an ex-girlfriend? Kind of embarrassing!
Pray for the pollsters, y’all. It’s tough to do polling when Trump changes his mind on crashing the U.S. economy faster than you can say “Panican.”

Here are some other highlights from DFP this week:
big apples from the big apple
Have you ever walked out of Whole Foods with a 12-pack of mini cupcakes and said to yourself, “I wish this wasn’t going back to Jeff Bezos’ pocket?”
With city-owned grocery stores, you can get all your late-night regrettable purchases (and your fresh produce, too) from a publicly-owned institution!
These days, looking at your grocery receipt feels like a jump scare — eggs cost how much? And we can’t expect any relief from the Tarrifier clown sitting in the Oval Office. However, some lawmakers are proposing ([link removed]) municipal grocery stores to help New York residents save more at the grocery store.
Our new polling ([link removed]) with the Climate and Community Institute finds that after reading a description of municipal grocery stores, more than two-thirds of NYC voters (66%) support them, with bipartisan support from Democrats (72%), Independents (64%), and Republicans (54%).

Pay up or shut up!
Our relationship with fossil fuel companies sort of feels like a horrible roommate who trashes the apartment and then refuses to pay any rent. While oil and gas companies are polluting our planet, making natural disasters worse, and then lying about climate change, regular people are paying the bill.
Our polling ([link removed]) with Fossil Free Media finds that nearly three-quarters of voters support requiring oil and gas companies to pay a share of costs for climate-related damages, including 81% of Black voters, 74% of Independents, and even 55% of Republicans.

Fossil fuel companies have truly put the “gas” in “gaslight” over the last century — more than two-thirds of voters (69%), including a majority of Republicans (52%), agree with a statement that oil and gas companies knew about the impacts of climate change but misled the public, and that they should subsequently pay for climate-related damages.
