*2.  Act now: File, pay or request an extension*

________________________________________________________________________

Tax pros: As the federal tax filing deadline approaches, remind your clients that there is still time to file [ [link removed] ] their federal income tax return and request direct deposit. Filing electronically can reduce tax return errors and choosing direct deposit typically delivers a refund within 21 days. If a taxpayer files their tax return and pays the entire amount owed by the deadline of April 15, they can avoid paying interest and penalties. The IRS offers several options for taxpayers who are making tax payments [ [link removed] ]. Individuals unable to file their tax return by the tax deadline can apply for a tax-filing extension [ [link removed] ].

*4.  News from the Justice Department’s Tax Division*

________________________________________________________________________

An Ohio tax preparer was permanently barred by a federal court in Ohio from preparing returns for others and from owning or operating any tax return preparation business in the future. According to the court’s ruling, Michael Craig [ [link removed] ] consented to the entry of the injunction both personally and through his business, Craig’s Tax Service. The court’s order requires Craig to send notice of the injunction to each person for whom he prepared federal tax returns or refund claims after Jan. 1, 2022. The IRS estimated a tax loss of more than $3.1 million in 2022 alone from tax returns prepared by Craig.
