*Gov. Whitmer Lowers Flags to Honor Former State Representative Floyd Clack* 

 

*LANSING, Mich. *– Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the State Capitol Complex to be lowered to half-staff on Saturday, April 12, 2025, to honor and remember former state Representative Floyd Clack. 

 

“Representative Floyd Clack was a dedicated public servant who stepped up for Michigan and championed his community throughout his life and career,” said *Governor Whitmer*. “A fixture of the Michigan legislature for over a decade, he advocated for legislation that made a real difference in people’s lives. His passion for supporting Michigan’s students and teachers has left a lasting impact in Flint and beyond. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and those who worked with and served alongside him.”   

 

Former state Representative Clack was born in Houston, Texas. He pursued a Bachelor of Science at Texas Southern University and earned his master’s degree in education while attending Eastern Michigan University. He began his career as a teacher and, eventually, became a guidance counselor for Flint Public Schools. 

 

Former state Representative Clack’s journey in public service began with his election to Flint City Council in 1979. He continued his career of public service when he was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 1982. Clack served seven terms representing the 80th and 48th districts where he was the vice chairman of the Democratic Black Caucus.  

 

After serving in the Michigan House of Representatives, Clack continued to dedicate his life to public service, holding several key positions, including president of the Flint Branch of the NAACP, Flint City Council member, and Genesee County commissioner. 

 

Former state Representative Clack is survived by his wife, Brenda, and their children, Michael and Mia.  

 

The State of Michigan recognizes the duty, honor, and service of former state Representative Floyd Clack by lowering flags to half-staff. To lower flags to half-staff, flags should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The process is reversed before the flag is lowered for the day.     

 

Flags should be returned to full staff on Sunday, April 13, 2025.
