*Governor Whitmer Makes Appointments to Boards and Commissions* 

 

*LANSING, Mich. —* Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced appointments to the following boards and commissions: Mackinac Island State Park Commission; Michigan Veterans’ Trust Fund Board of Trustees; Michigan Veterans’ Memorial Park Commission; Michigan Domestic and Sexual Violence Prevention and Treatment Board; Child Lead Exposure Elimination Commission; Human Trafficking Health Advisory Board; Human Trafficking Commission; Regional Transit Authority Board of Directors; Michigan Arts and Culture Council; Michigan Trails Advisory Council; Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board; School Safety and Mental Health Commission; Early Childhood Investment Corporation Executive Committee; Michigan Public School Employees Retirement System Board; Certificate of Need Commission; Michigan Interagency Council on Homelessness; State Police Retirement Board; Michigan Soybean Committee; Board of Health and Safety Compliance and Appeals; Commission on Middle Eastern American Affairs; Public Health Advisory Council; Organized Retail Crime Advisory Board; Michigan Asparagus Advisory Board; and the Michigan Sentencing Commission. 

 

_*Mackinac Island State Park Commission*_ 

Marlee Brown, of Mackinac Island, is the co-owner of Arnold Freight and a professional artist. Brown holds a Bachelor of Arts in history and political science from the University of Michigan. Marlee Brown will be reappointed as a resident of Mackinac Island for a term commencing April 13, 2025, and expiring April 12, 2031.   

 

Liz Boyd, of Lansing, is the principal at Liz Boyd Public Relations. Boyd holds a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and a Master of Arts in advertising from Michigan State University. Liz Boyd will be appointed as a Democrat for a term commencing April 13, 2025, and expiring April 12, 2031. Boyd succeeds Rachel Bendit, whose term is expiring.   

 

The Mackinac Island State Park Commission was formed in 1895 and is responsible for all aspects of managing Mackinac State Historic Parks. The Commission retains and exercises its authority and responsibility for developing the mission, goals, policies, objectives and direction for the unique properties under its jurisdiction. 

 

These appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.  

 

_*Michigan Veterans’ Trust Fund Board of Trustees*_ 

Paul McIvor, of Yale, is the former state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a former Yale city councilmember, and a retired teacher. During his enlistment, McIvor served as an engineer for the United States Army. Paul McIvor is reappointed as the representative of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring February 25, 2028.  

  

Gregory Spight, of Detroit, is a maintenance coordinator at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Detroit. Spight is also a Vietnam Veteran of the 1st Infantry Division and a member of the American Legion Department of Michigan, serving as First Vice Commander at Coleman A. Young Post 202. Spight attended Wayne County Community College and the University of Detroit Mercy. Gregory Spight is appointed as the representative of the American Legion for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring February 25, 2028. Spight succeeds James Wallace, whose term has expired. 

 

Ramiro “Ray” Lopez, of New Boston, is a former electrician at the Ford Motor Company. Lopez previously served as the Vetrans of Foreign Wars Department of Michigan state commander. Lopez holds an electrical certification from Henry Ford Community College. Romiro Lopez is appointed as an independent member who may or may not be a member of one or more congressionally chartered veteran’s organizations, but who shall not represent any congressionally chartered veteran’s organization of which they are a member for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring February 25, 2026. Lopez succeeds Gregory Spight, whose term has expired. 

  

The Michigan Veterans’ Trust Fund was created in 1946 from $50 million in postwar reserve funds to provide grants for the emergency needs of veterans. The Michigan Veterans’ Trust Fund Board of Trustees governs grant policies and adjudication, county committee appointments, and expenditure from trust earnings.

_*Michigan Veterans’ Memorial Park Commission*_

Floyd Crawford, of Baraga, is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and an on-call elder nutritional program driver for the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. Floyd Crawford is appointed as a member of the general public for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring December 18, 2026. Crawford succeeds Danny Craig, whose term has expired. 

 

Gregory Havrilcsak, of Frankenmuth, is a lecturer on United States history, world civilizations, and the American military experience at the University of Michigan – Flint. Havrilcsak holds a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Michigan and a Master of Arts in history from Oakland University. Gregory Havrilcsak is reappointed as a member of the general public for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring December 18, 2027.  

 

Robert Price, of Pinckney, is a United States Army veteran and the former director of veteran outreach at the Michigan Department of Military Affairs. Price holds a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice from Saginaw Valley State University and a Master of Arts in global organizational management from Ashford University. Robert Price is reappointed as a member of the general public for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring December 18, 2027.    

 

The Michigan Veterans’ Memorial Park Commission advises on the development, management, and maintenance of the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Park in Lansing, the operation of programs exclusive to the park, and the security services and enforcement of rules for the care and preservation of the park.

_*Michigan Domestic and Sexual Violence Prevention and Treatment Board*_ 

Judge Cynthia Ward, of Lansing, is a judge for the 54-A District Court in Ingham County. Judge Ward holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Rutgers University and a Juris Doctor from the Villanova School of Law. Judge Cynthia Ward is appointed as a member with experience in an area related to the problems of domestic or sexual violence for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring December 4, 2027. Judge Ward succeeds Elizabeth Hines, whose term has expired. 

 

Rebecca Shiemke, of Ann Arbor, is a managing attorney at the Michigan Advocacy Program and has worked for over thirty years as an attorney in the domestic violence field. Shiemke holds a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and women’s studies from Albion College and a Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School. Rebecca Shiemke is reappointed as a member with experience in an area related to the problems of domestic or sexual violence for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring December 4, 2027.  

 

The Michigan Domestic and Sexual Violence Prevention and Treatment Board coordinates and monitors programs and services for the prevention of domestic and sexual violence and the treatment of victims of domestic and sexual violence. The Board administers grants awarded under the Violence Against Women Act, the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act, and other governmental and non-governmental grants.

_*Child Lead Exposure Elimination Commission*_ 

Diane McCloskey, of Detroit, is the executive director of CLEARCorps Detroit, a non-profit organization dedicated to lead poisoning prevention through its programs, education, outreach, and policy work. Diane McCloskey is appointed as a member representing an organization that focuses on lead exposure for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring December 14, 2026. McCloskey succeeds Paul Haan, who has resigned.   

 

The Child Lead Exposure Elimination Commission focuses on implementing the recommendations of the former Child Lead Poisoning Elimination Board and monitoring the state’s efforts to eliminate lead exposure in children. The Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the Governor and department director to coordinate and collaborate with all levels of government and stakeholders regarding programs and policies related to the elimination of child lead exposure.   

    

This appointment is not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate. 

 

_*Human Trafficking Health Advisory Board*_ 

Dashamir Pettway, of Dearborn, is the chief executive officer and founder of I Am Living LLC. Pettway holds an associate degree in social work from Macomb Community College. Dashamir Pettway is appointed as a human trafficking survivor for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring December 31, 2028. Pettway succeeds Rodica Richmond, whose term has expired. 

 

The Human Trafficking Health Advisory Board was established to collect and analyze information concerning medical and mental health services available to survivors of human trafficking, identify state, federal and local agencies that are involved with issues relating to human trafficking, and coordinate the dissemination of information concerning medical and mental health services available to survivors of human trafficking in this state. The Board may establish a program to improve public awareness of medical and mental health services available to survivors of human trafficking in this state.

_*Human Trafficking Commission*_ 

Leslie King, of Grand Rapids, is the founder and president of Sacred Beginnings Transitional Homes, which offers housing and support services for victims of human trafficking. King holds an associate degree in social work from Grand Rapids Community College. Leslie King is reappointed as an individual who has survived human trafficking for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring March 1, 2027.   

 

Hon. Lisa McCormick, of Dimondale, is the chief circuit judge pro tempore on the 30th Judicial Circuit Court in Ingham County. McCormick holds a Bachelor of Arts in legal studies from the University of Pittsburgh and a Juris Doctor from Thomas Cooley Law School. Lisa McCormick is reappointed as a circuit court judge who serves in a family court for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring March 1, 2027.   

 

The Human Trafficking Commission is designed to identify sources for grants that will assist in examining and countering human trafficking, fund research programs to determine the extent and nature of human trafficking in this state, and provide information and training to police officers, prosecutors, court personnel, social services personnel, and other individuals.

_*Regional Transit Authority Board of Directors*_ 

David Massaron, of Detroit, is vice president of General Motors’ Infrastructure and Corporate Citizenship group. Previously, Massaron was General Motors’ chief economic development and real estate officer, senior vice president and chief financial officer at Wayne State University, and budget director for the State of Michigan. Additionally, Massaron serves on the boards of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, the Downtown Detroit Partnership, the Detroit Regional Partnership, and the Hudson Weber Foundation. Massaron holds a Bachelor of Arts in political theory and constitutional democracy from Michigan State University and a Juris Doctor from William and Mary Law School. David Massaron is reappointed as the governor’s representative for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring March 31, 2028. 

 

Regional Transit Authority Board of Directors’ mission is to manage and secure transportation resources that enhance mobility options, improve quality of life for residents, and increase economic viability in the region.

_*Michigan Arts and Culture Council*_ 

Dr. Noel Jackson, of Trenton, is the president and founder of the Downriver Youth Performing Arts Center. Additionally, Jackson is a practicing dentist and the owner and founder of Jackson Snyder Parker Dental Practice. Jackson is also a member of the Rotary Club of Trenton, vice president of the Trenton Business Association, and a past member of the Trenton Educational Foundation board. Jackson holds a Bachelor of Arts in history from Michigan State University and a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Detroit Dental School. Dr. Noel Jackson is appointed for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring September 1, 2027. Jackson succeeds Robert Womack, whose term has expired. 

 

The Michigan Arts and Culture Council serves to encourage, develop, and facilitate an enriched environment of creative and cultural activity in Michigan. The Council envisions a Michigan where every citizen celebrates the state's cultural treasures and arts, and cultural experiences are accessible to all its citizens.  

 

This appointment is not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate. 

 

_*Michigan Trails Advisory Council*_ 

Shannon Bessette, of Hastings, is the owner of three Michigan dealerships: US27 Motorsports, Capitol Harley-Davidson and Motorsports, and Battle Creek Harley Davidson. Bessette holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science, communication, and history from Aquinas College. Shannon Bessette is appointed to represent ORV and snowmobile owners for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring January 17, 2029. Bessette succeeds Mark Losey, whose term has expired.  

The Michigan Trails Advisory Council was formed with the enactment of Public Act 451 of 1994. The purpose of the council is to advise the Department of Natural Resources and The Governor on the creation, development, operation, and maintenance of motorized and nonmotorized trails in the state, including snowmobile, biking, equestrian, hiking, offroad vehicle and skiing trails.

_*Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board - “Children Trust Michigan”*_   

Chandra Madafferi, of Lansing, is the president of the Michigan Education Association. Madafferi holds a Bachelor of Science in special education, cognitive impairments, and therapeutic recreation from Central Michigan University and a Master of Education in special education from the University of Michigan Dearborn. Chandra Madafferi is appointed as a member representing organized labor for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring December 19, 2027. Madafferi succeeds Paula Herbart, whose term has expired.  

 

The Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board, also known as Children Trust Michigan, was established by the Michigan Legislature in 1982 and serves as a voice for Michigan's children and families and promotes their health, safety, and welfare by funding effective local programs and services that prevent child abuse and neglect. 

 

This appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Senate. 

 

_*School Safety and Mental Health Commission*_ 

Dr. Daveda Colbert, of Farmington Hills, is the superintendent of the Wayne Regional Education Service Agency. Previously, Colbert was superintendent of Oak Park Schools and assistant superintendent for Detroit Public Schools. Colbert holds a Bachelor of Science in accounting and business administration from Southern University at New Orleans, a Master of Arts in teaching from Wayne State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in education from Oakland University. Dr. Daveda Colbert is appointed as a member with a background in school administration for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring April 9, 2029. 

 

Dr. Alyse Ley, of Okemos, is the associate chair of education in the Michigan State University Department of Psychiatry and the director of Prevent to Protect, the Adolescent Targeted Violence Prevention Program at Michigan State University. Ley holds a Bachelor of Science in psychology, a Doctor of Osteopathy from Michigan State University, and completed her residency in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Michigan. Dr. Alyse Ley is appointed as a member with a background in school threat assessments for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring April 9, 2029. 

 

Dr. Nasuh Malas, of Ann Arbor, is the division director and service chief for child and adolescent psychiatry in the University of Michigan’s Department of Psychiatry. Malas holds appointments as a clinical associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry, where he is associate chair for child and adolescent psychiatry, and the in Department of Pediatrics at the University. Malas holds a Bachelor of Science in medical microbiology, Master of Public Health, and Doctor of Medicine from the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Nasuh Malas is appointed as a member with an experience in the provision of inpatient treatment to children under age 18 for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring April 9, 2029. 

 

John Dewane, of Williamston, serves as Ingham County prosecutor. Dewane has worked in the Ingham County Prosecutor’s office since 2001, and was most recently deputy chief assistant prosecutor, before being appointed prosecutor in 2022 and re-elected in 2024. Dewane holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of South Carolina and a Juris Doctor from Thomas Cooley Law School. John Dewane is appointed as a prosecutor for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring April 9, 2029. 

 

King Bethel, of Detroit, is a freshman at Wayne State University and a recent graduate of Jalen Rose Leadership Academy. Bethel is a youth mentor at Downtown Boxing Gym, a volunteer with the Kicks for Kids Foundation, and writes poetry with the InsideOut Literary Arts program. Bethel is a recipient of the Detroit Pistons Black Excellence Scholarship and a recent alumni of the Skillman Foundation’s President’s Youth Council. King Bethel is appointed as a member who is a current student or recent graduate of a high school for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring April 9, 2027. 

 

The School Safety and Mental Health Commission was established by the Michigan legislature in 2024 and modified by executive order 2025-1. The commission shall provide recommendations to reduce youth suicides and strengthen the mental health of school-age children, adolescents, and their families through a comprehensive, statewide approach. The commission may also review and make recommendations related to school safety measures including but not limited to: the development and evaluation of school safety model practices, the review of the statewide school safety information policy and the emergency operations plans, the role of school safety liaisons, the emerging trends in school safety technology and the baseline safety requirements for schools or baseline hardening measures for new and existing schools.

_*Early Childhood Investment Corporation Executive Committee*_ 

Dr. Robert Davies, of Weidman, is a tenured professor teaching leadership courses in the Colleges of Business and Education at Central Michigan University. Davies previously served as the president of Central Michigan University, Murray State University, and Eastern Oregon University. Davies serves on the boards of the Mid-Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the Midland Business Alliance, the Michigan Children’s Foundation, and the Great Lakes Business Alliance. Davies holds a Bachelor of Science in management from the University of Nevada at Reno, a Master of Business Administration in finance and marketing from the University of Oregon, and a Doctor of Philosophy in higher education administration from The State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Robert Davies is appointed for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring July 22, 2028. Davies succeeds Sharon Peters, whose term has expired. 

 

The Early Childhood Investment Corporation was created to be the state's focal point for information and investment in early childhood education in Michigan so that children can arrive at the kindergarten door safe, healthy, and eager for learning and life. The Investment Corporation was founded in 2005 and charged with implementing a Great Start system for Michigan both at the state and community level.

_*Michigan Public School Employees Retirement System Board*_ 

Mark Greathead, of Brownstown, is the superintendent of Woodhaven-Brownstown School District and an instructor of education at Washtenaw Community College. Previously, Greathead served as the director of personnel and employee services for Allen Park Public Schools. Greathead is a member of the executive boards of the Metropolitan Detroit Bureau of School Studies Executive Board and the K-12 Alliance of Michigan. Greathead holds a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and general science and a Master of Arts in educational leadership from Eastern Michigan University. Mark Greathead is reappointed as a superintendent for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring March 30, 2029. 

 

Elizabeth Eastway, of Cadillac, is a business coordinator for the Wexford-Missaukee Independent School District. Previously, Eastway was an accounting assistant at Wexford-Missaukee ISD. Eastway is a member of the Michigan School Business Officials association and holds certificates as a business office specialist and in business management. Eastway attended Ferris State University and Northwestern Michigan College. Elizabeth Eastway is reappointed as a member in an active or retired educational support position for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring March 30, 2029. 

 

The Michigan Public School Employees' Retirement System Board is responsible for general oversight of retirement, survivor, and disability benefits to employees in public school districts, intermediate school districts, community colleges and certain universities.

_*Certificate of Need Commission*_ 

Robert Gibson, of West Bloomfield, is the deputy trustee of SEIU Healthcare Michigan. Gibson holds a Bachelor of Science in labor studies from Wayne State University. Robert Gibson is appointed to represent Independents and organized labor unions in this state for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring January 1, 2027. Gibson succeeds Renee Turner-Bailey, who has resigned.  

 

The Certificate of Need (CON) Commission has the responsibility to develop, approve, disapprove, or revise CON Review Standards that are used by the CON Program Section to issue decisions on CON applications. The Commission evaluates the Review Standards for modification on a three-year rotating schedule as identified in the Commission Workplan. The Commission also has the authority to make recommendations to revise the list of covered clinical services subject to CON review.

_*Michigan Interagency Council on Homelessness*_ 

Lisa Kemmis, of Belding, is a chief housing solutions officer for the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. Kemmis holds an associate degree in applied sciences from Lansing Community College and a Bachelor of Science in community development with an emphasis in public administration from Central Michigan University. Lisa Kemmis is appointed to represent the director of the MSHDA, or their designee, for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring January 31, 2029. Kemmis succeeds Kelly Rose, whose term has expired.  

 

Ryan Hertz, of Huntington Woods, is the president and chief executive officer of Lighthouse MI. Hertz was previously the president of South Oakland Shelter, an Advisory Council Member at Adamah Detroit, and a Founding Leadership Group and Executive Council member at Pontiac Collective Impact Partnership. Ryan holds a Bachelor of Arts in folklore and ethnomusicology from Indiana University and a Master of Social Work at Wayne State University. Ryan Hertz is reappointed to represent the general public for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring January 31, 2029. 

 

The Michigan Interagency Council on Homelessness was designed to develop, adopt, and update a 10-year plan to end homelessness. The 10-year plan shall include evidence-based improvements to programs and policies that will ensure services and housing are provided in an efficient, cost-effective, and productive manner. The plan shall be coordinated and tailored with the Federal Strategic Plan, "Opening Doors," to meet the needs of this state's homeless population.

_*State Police Retirement Board*_ 

Julian Darden, of Lansing, is a commercial loan officer and vice president at ChoiceOne Bank. Darden holds a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Central Michigan University and Master of Business Administration from Northwood University. Julian Darden is reappointed as a member of the general public with experience in the insurance, actuarial, or institutional investment field for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring December 31, 2027.    

 

Captain Timothy Olson, of Charlotte, is commander of the training division of the Michigan State Police. Olson has served with the Michigan State Police for over 24 years, and has held the ranks of Trooper, Detective Trooper, Sergeant, First Lieutenant, and Captain. Olson holds a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from Ferris State University. Timothy Olson is appointed as an officer member of the retirement system having the rank of lieutenant of above for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring December 31, 2025. Olson succeeds Col. James Grady, who has resigned. 

 

The Michigan State Police Retirement Board provides oversight of the Michigan State Police Retirement System.

_*Michigan Soybean Committee*_ 

John Burk, of Bay City, is the owner of Burk Farms. Burk holds an associate degree in science, a bachelor’s degree in agriculture technology and systems management, and a master's degree in crop and soil science from Michigan State University. John Burk is reappointed to represent District 5 growers for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring September 23, 2027.   

 

Scott Wilson, of Lexington, is the co-owner of Wilson Farms, LLC. Mr. Wilson holds a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering technology from Central Michigan University. Scott Wilson is reappointed to represent District 4 growers for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring September 23, 2027.  

 

Gary Parr, of Charlotte, is the owner and president of Parr Farms Inc. Gary Parr is appointed to represent District 2 growers for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring September 23, 2027. Parr succeeds Pete Crawford, whose term has expired.    

 

The Michigan Soybean Committee develops procedures relating to the soybean marketing program and recommends amendments to the marketing program. The Committee prepares the estimated budget required for the proper operation of the marketing program, develops methods for collecting and auditing the assessments, and collects and assembles information and data necessary for proper administration of the marketing program.

_*Board of Health and Safety Compliance and Appeals*_ 

Kim Dennison, of Laingsburg, is an occupational health nurse for the Michigan Laborers' Training and Apprenticeship Institute and an instructor and the owner of Absolute Learning Success, LLC, a health and safety training business. Dennison holds an associate of applied sciences in nursing from Lansing Community College, a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Phoenix, and a Master of Public Health in occupational nursing from the University of North Carolina. Additionally, Dennison is a certified occupational health nurse, OSHA outreach trainer, and registered nurse in the state of Michigan. Kim Dennison is reappointed to represent labor in the health industry for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring March 18, 2029. 

 

Daniel Gadbois, of Romulus, is the senior director of safety and health for L.S. Brinker. Previously, Gadbois was director of safety and field operations for Corrigan Construction. Gadbois serves as a board of zoning appeals member for the City of Romulus and as a Wayne County reserve officer. Gadbois is also a certified OSHA outreach trainer and a graduate of Schoolcraft Community College’s police officer reserve training program. Daniel Gadbois is appointed to represent management in the construction industry for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring March 18, 2029. Gadbois succeeds James Dion, whose term has expired. 

 

The Board of Health and Safety Compliance and Appeals reviews all contested Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) cases involving safety and health citations, orders, and appeals. The Board may order testimony at hearings, compel witnesses or require depositions, and further promulgates rules of procedure for hearings, maintaining consistency with any federal occupation safety or health standard.

_*Commission on Middle Eastern American Affairs*_

Matthew Stiffler, of Ann Arbor, is the director of the Center for Arab Narratives at the Arab American National Museum. Stiffler holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and history from Waynesburg University, a Master of Science in American culture from Utah State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in American culture and Arab American studies from the University of Michigan. Matthew Stiffler will be reappointed for a term commencing April 20, 2025, and will expire April 19, 2029. 

 

Saif Alsenad, of Dearborn Heights, is the Director of Government and Public Affairs for Wayne County. Alsenad was previously the Wayne County Community Relations Ombudsman at SMART Bus. Alsenad holds an associate degree in criminal justice from Henry Ford College and a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from Madonna University. Saif Alsenad will be reappointed for a term commencing April 20, 2025, and will expire April 19, 2029. 

 

Karim Kadouh, of Dearborn Heights, is the vice president of marketing and strategy at The Custard Company. Kadouh was previously a communications intern in the Executive Office of President Biden and a program mentor and academic coach at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. Karim Kadouh will be reappointed for a term commencing April 20, 2025, and will expire April 19, 2029. 

 

The Commission on Middle Eastern American Affairs advises the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity and the Governor on issues relating to the Arab and Chaldean communities in Michigan and promotes awareness of their culture and history. They also work to empower, promote, and advance the Middle Eastern American community in Michigan.

_*Public Health Advisory Council*_ 

Sara Simmonds, of Grand Rapids, is the environmental health director for the Kent County Health Department. Simmonds was previously a United States Peace Corps volunteer. Simmonds holds a Bachelor of Science in environmental studies and applications from Michigan State University and a Master of Public Administration in public management and urban and regional planning from Grand Valley State University. Sara Simmonds is appointed to represent Environmental Health Experts for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring November 1, 2025. Sara succeeds Tanya Rule, who has resigned. 

 

James McGrath, of East Lansing, is the president, dean, and a professor of law at Cooley Law School. Dean McGrath earned an associate degree in liberal arts and sciences from De Anza College, a bachelor's degree in psychology from San José State University, a Master of Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health, a Juris Doctor from Howard University School of Law, and a Master of Laws in graduate legal education from Temple University. James McGrath is appointed as a member at large for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring November 1, 2028. McGrath succeeds Shenlin Chen, whose term has expired. 

 

Rita Caruso, of Ann Arbor, is a professor emerita in the School for Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan and in the University’s School of Public Health, where she was a professor of Toxicology. Caruso continues to consult on current research projects and works to improve environmental health protections in the local community. Caruso holds a Bachelor of Science in biology, a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, and a Doctor of Philosophy in environmental health with a focus in toxicology from the University of Cincinnati. Rita Caruso is reappointed to represent toxicologists for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring November 1, 2028. 

 

The Public Health Advisory Council was created within the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services at the recommendation of the Public Health Advisory Commission. The Council will develop an action plan for implementing the recommendations of the Commission and is tasked with providing advice about emerging issues in public health, monitoring the effectiveness of Michigan’s public health response system, and reviewing multiagency efforts to support collaboration and a unified approach on public health responses.

_*Organized Retail Crime Advisory Board*_ 

Andrew Beardslee, of Grand Ledge, is the vice president of government affairs at the Michigan Retailers Association. Beardslee was the former director of state policy at the National Pork Producers Council. Beardslee holds a Bachelor of Arts in English, Spanish, and applied linguistics from Grand Valley State University. Andrew Beardslee is appointed to represent the Michigan Retailers Association for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring March 30, 2029. Andrew Beardslee succeeds Amy Drumm, whose term has expired.  

 

The Organized Retail Crime Advisory Board was created to develop a database of organized retail crimes, compile annual statistics on organized retail crime acts, recommend actions to be taken by the department and law enforcement to further combat organized retail crime, and to submit an annual report to the director of the department on the effectiveness of this act in reducing organized retail crime.

_*Michigan Asparagus Board*_ 

Gerrit Herrygers, of Hart, is the lead sales representative and certified crop advisor for Wilbur-Ellis Company and farmer for Herrygers Farms. Mr. Herrygers earned a Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness Management from Michigan State University. Gerrit Herrygers is appointed as a member to represent Northern-Central Michigan Growers on the Michigan Asparagus Advisory Board for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring November 13, 2027. Gerrit Herrygers succeeds Dwight Fuehring, whose term has expired. 

 

The Michigan Asparagus Advisory Board seeks to promote the production and consumption of asparagus grown in Michigan as well as to assist in the agricultural research and development of asparagus farming.

_*Michigan Sentencing Commission*_ 

Judge Christopher Yates, of Grand Rapids, serves on the Third District of the Michigan Court of Appeals. Yates holds a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and mathematics from Kalamazoo College and both a master’s in business administration and Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois. Judge Christopher Yates is appointed as chair for a term commencing April 10, 2025, and expiring April 9, 2029.    

 

The Michigan Sentencing Commission was reestablished by Michigan’s 102nd legislature to collect, prepare, analyze, and disseminate information on sentencing and release policies. The Commission seeks to provide legislators with guidance on new sentences and to improve the sentencing guidelines’ consistency and proportion to offenses.
