Friend —The economy remains in a tail spin, and people are showing their frustration with Trump. Last weekend, millions of people across the country took to the streets to fight back against Trump and Musk’s abuses. Meanwhile, what is the House doing? They just voted 220-208 to pass the SAVE Act, their radical, restrictive voter ID law.

The SAVE Act would require all voters to prove their citizenship by presenting a passport or birth certificate — documents many U.S. voters don’t have. They would be required to do so in person when registering to vote or updating their voter registration information. The legislation would prevent registering to vote by mail and online — and effectively end voter registration drives nationwide.

Senate Democrats have said they’ll block the bill, but we can’t take anything for granted — we have to do everything we can to prevent it from moving forward. If the SAVE Act becomes law, tens of millions of eligible voters — especially seniors, veterans, women, students, and rural voters — could be blocked from casting their ballots. But here’s the catch: this vote will require 60 votes to pass in the Senate, which means we have a real chance to stop it.

The environmental movement must respond — and we need your help. Last week, LCV flew in state environmental leaders from all over the country to fight for our top priorities, including demanding that senators fight for everyone’s right to vote and oppose the SAVE Act. We’re asking for YOUR help to power campaigns like these to oppose attacks on our constitutional freedoms.

Without a democracy where everyone is represented, corporate polluters will decide the policies that affect our health and our planet’s future.

Friend, the SAVE Act would threaten the right to vote for tens of millions of U.S. voters. Here’s who this Republican-led bill hurts the most:

  • People who don’t have a passport — about half of the U.S. population
  • Senior citizens and the 60 million people who live in rural areas — who face additional barriers to presenting a passport or birth certificate in person
  • Veterans and current military personnel who would no longer be able to use their military IDs to register or vote
  • An estimated 69 million women who changed their last name after marriage
  • Students, people of color, and members of Tribal communities

Many of the marginalized communities most impacted by the Trump administration’s attacks on climate policies and environmental safeguards are also the people Republicans are trying to keep from registering to vote.

This is an attempt by Republicans to control who has access to vote and suppress any voters who might oppose their sweeping pro-polluter agenda.

We must respond by applying pressure on the Senate to stop this destructive bill that threatens the rights of millions of eligible voters. Will you help?

Thanks for supporting our democracy, Friend.

Onward,

LCV Rapid Response Team
