Quick Question on Tariffs

Dear John,

As you probably know, President Trump announced new sweeping tariffs on April 2. This is on top of other recent tariffs, including on our neighbors in Canada and Mexico. While he just pushed paused for 90 days on some of these tariffs just today, he actually increased the tariff for China to 125%.

There's no question that the U.S. could benefit from a stronger and more consistent trade policy. But these tariffs are forcing hardworking Pennsylvanians to pay even more for less. And worse, this chaotic "policy-by-tweet and threat" means higher prices for groceries, gas, medicine, cars, and much more.

Should Congress vote on legislation to prevent these tariffs from taking effect?

Whether at an effective rate of 10% or more, the administration’s tariffs are nothing but a new tax on hardworking Pennsylvanians and all Americans. Experts say they'll force American families to pay thousands of dollars more a year for groceries, gas, and more. They could also raise the price of a new car by as much as $5,000 to $10,000.

Congress should push for a stronger and consistent trade policy that supports Pennsylvania jobs and manufacturing. Both parties can work together to support made-in-America products and jobs. But this particular erratic Executive decree isn't the answer. We are already dealing with higher prices. The last thing we should do is make the situation even worse.

TARIFF AND TRADE TOWN HALL

Even though there’s a partial “pause,” we should all get smarter on tariffs and trade--and how they affect our everyday lives. To do this, we're hosting a Telephone Town Hall on Thursday, April 24 at 6pm. We'll be joined by special guest Cristian deRitis, Senior Director of Moody's Analytics, headquartered in West Chester, who will give us a global view of how tariffs are affecting our economy nationally and personally. And Lucine Sihelnik, the president and CEO of the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance and a small business owner herself, is also joining us to share a local perspective.
