Hi Friend of 5 Gyres,

April is here, and with it comes Earth Month — a time to reflect on the beauty and significance of our shared planet and the steps we can take to protect it. From using your voice to support policy to collecting data that drives change, we encourage everyone to take one meaningful action this month for a healthier future.

With recent federal funding cuts and the elimination of hundreds of NPS employees responsible for stewardship and waste management, our national parks need you now, more than ever. Take Action on Microbeads

5 Gyres is co-sponsoring AB 823 (Boerner), a California bill that would prohibit intentionally added plastic microbeads ([link removed]) in leave-on cosmetics and cleaning products.

The bill passed through the Assembly Natural Resources Committee with a 10-4 vote (watch our Director of Regional Policy & Program Development testify at the 46:00 mark! ([link removed]) ). Next up is the Assembly Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee at the end of April. Show your support by sending an email with one click ([link removed]) !

Take Action on Plastic Pellets

Plastic pellets (AKA “nurdles”) ([link removed]) , the raw material used to make plastic products, are frequently spilled into the environment. 5 Gyres is supporting the first-ever International Plastic Pellet Count ([link removed]) on May 3 — a day in which volunteers across the globe will take part in clean up events at local waterways to identify where plastic pellet pollution is happening and make the case for action.

You can host a pellet count ([link removed]) , join an existing event, or learn more at the webinar on April 15 ([link removed]) .
