Hi friend,

As the global economy reacts to Trump’s tariff announcements – we’ve been crunching some numbers to see what it means for lower-income countries.

It’s not looking good.

Unsurprisingly, higher tariffs on exports to the US, the largest economy in the world, will directly hit countries already suffering from high debt levels.

For example, Sri Lanka, one of the 54 countries currently in debt crisis, is being hit with a huge tariff of 44% on exports. This could put severe pressure on the country’s already strained finances.

Lower-income governments will be forced to cut even more spending on vital public services, like healthcare, meaning that more people will be at risk of being pushed into poverty.

Many of the countries with the highest debt payments are dependent on raw materials for their exports. And the prices for raw materials are notoriously volatile, rising during global economic boom, then falling during downturns. A change in these prices often triggers intensified debt problems.

The largest impact of rising tariffs might not be directly on exports, or changes in currencies, but the wider global economic impact. Recessions can hit us all hard, especially in countries with already fragile economies.

The news may seem to be getting worse, but resistance is building. Campaigners all over the world are coming together and calling for debt cancellation. Which is even more crucial now, to help protect countries during this period of economic turmoil. We must continue to stand in solidarity with those facing a worsening debt crisis.
If you haven’t please sign the petition to world leaders to cancel debt, choose hope. ([link removed])
