Team,
Have you ever stood on a stage and looked out over a sea of people fighting for change? Not many people get that chance, but I had the pleasure on Saturday when I spoke to an audience of thousands at the Hands Off! Philadelphia rally. It was a deeply inspiring day, even more so when I saw photos and videos from hundreds of similar rallies across the country — the people are showing up.
The Trump Administration is gambling with our futures, introducing economically incoherent tariffs, crashing the global economy, and calling it “liberation.”
This is some of the most disingenuous political doublespeak I’ve ever heard.
At a time when many of our seniors have just lost a huge chunk of their retirement savings, when tens of thousands of federal workers are losing their jobs, when the GOP is threatening cuts to Medicare and Social Security – now, Trump is implementing tariffs that will make everything from groceries to building materials vastly more expensive for consumers.
Even some Republicans are beginning to acknowledge the obvious: Trump’s tariffs are a disaster for Americans. Seven Republican Senators, including Chuck Grassley and Mitch McConnell, have signed on to a bill that would require Congressional approval of tariffs on our trading partners.
That’s great, but here’s the thing: the Constitution doesn’t give the power to levy tariffs to the President — that’s a Congressional power.
I’m glad some actions are being taken by my colleagues across the aisle, but it’s not nearly enough. Trump has a shoddy understanding of how the global economy works, and his policies are going to cause real harm: families buying food, cratering retirement savings, factory closures. The list goes on and on, and the people will bear the brunt of Trump’s stubborn ignorance.
So like I did from the stage on Saturday, I’m fighting back, and I could use your help. I want to hear from you: Are you afraid of how Trump’s tariffs will impact you and your family? Are you already feeling it? Let me know — your stories will help me fight back against these catastrophic tariffs in Congress.
We’re at a political tipping point, friends. Your stories can help make a difference.
