House Republicans are pushing the SAVE Act, a dangerous and unnecessary piece of legislation that would make it harder for American citizens to vote by requiring people to show up in person to register to vote with their passports or birth certificates.
There are plenty of reasons why stopping the SAVE Act is important, and I’m about to give you 3 big ones — but first, will you add your name to our petition DEMANDING the House vote down this anti-democracy legislation?
Here are three big reasons why the SAVE Act is undemocratic:
1) Millions of Americans don’t have easy access to documents proving citizenship. In fact, according to a recent survey, nearly 1 in 10 voting age U.S. citizens simply don’t have or cannot easily get a passport or birth certificate. And in this legislation, drivers licenses don’t count.
2) Married women who change their name could face additional obstacles to voting. If someone’s proof-of-citizenship documents (aka birth certificate or passport) don’t match their current name, voting could require additional documentation.
3) It will make it harder for deployed service members and their families to register to vote. It eliminates online and mail voter registration and requires registration in person.
We should be making voting more accessible, not shutting people out of the process. This is a blatant attack on voting rights because the GOP knows their out-of-touch policies are unpopular with voters.
We need to show the GOP that we’re ready to fight against attacks on our voting rights. Will you sign our petition to send a message to the GOP that we won’t allow them to pass laws like the SAVE Act?
Thanks for taking up this fight with me, John.
