April Marks Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month

Limb Loss Awareness Wear Orange Wednesday

Every April, Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month shines a light on the more than 2.7 million Americans living with limb loss or congenital limb differences. Limb loss can result from a variety of causes, including trauma, infection, cancer, or complications from diabetes or vascular disease.

Beyond the physical challenges, many individuals face social, emotional, and financial barriers that require comprehensive care and long-term support. Access to the right support and resources ensures that individuals with limb loss can thrive in all aspects of life.

Administered by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), the Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) division provides a range of services to help individuals with disabilities—including those with limb loss—prepare for, find, and maintain meaningful employment. TWC provides career counseling and guidance, job placement assistance, training, prosthetic and assistive device funding, transportation assistance and workplace accommodations. To be eligible, individuals must have a documented disability that presents a barrier to employment. The program is person-centered, which helps individuals set goals and build skills that align with their strengths and ambitions.

Texas also benefits from local partnerships with national organizations such as:


* Amputee Coalition [ [link removed] ] (offering peer support, advocacy, and education)
* Limbs for Life Foundation [ [link removed] ]
* Hanger Clinic [ [link removed] ] and other prosthetic providers with community outreach programs

Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month is a reminder that strength can come in many forms. On *Saturday, April 12, at 10:30 a.m.*, Amputee Awareness is hosting its *2025 Walk in the Park* at the Mission Park Pavilions in San Antonio, Texas. This event is an opportunity to show support, celebrate resilience, and advocate for amputees. Whether it's the courage to take a first step with a new prosthesis or the determination to return to the workforce, Texans living with limb loss continue to break barriers every day.
