Our fundamental right to vote is under attack. Since the Supreme Court's
2013 decision in Shelby County v. Holder, which weakened key provisions of
the Voting Rights Act, states have enacted over 100 restrictive voting
laws, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities.

We can fix this – but Congress needs to act.

That’s why we’re calling on Congress to pass the John R. Lewis Voting
Rights Advancement Act (JLVRAA). This critical legislation would restore
the full power of the VRA, requiring states with a track record of voter
suppression to get federal approval before making changes to their voting
laws. It would also increase transparency and make sure that voters are
notified of changes to voting practices.

Meanwhile, some Republicans are pushing the misleadingly named SAVE Act (a
bill they might vote on as soon as next week!), which would impose
unnecessary and burdensome requirements to register to vote. This bill
targets communities of color and is designed to make voting more difficult
– all under the false pretense of combating voter fraud. We know the
truth: this is yet another attempt to undermine democracy.

The JLVRAA is our best chance to protect the fundamental right to vote and
restore the safeguards that helped keep our elections fair for decades. We
can’t let this opportunity slip by.
