Loudermilk Introduces Financial Reporting Threshold Modernization Act | Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) issued the following statement after he reintroduced the Financial Reporting Threshold Modernization Act (H.R. 1799) to update the Domestic Currency Transaction Report (CTR) threshold from $10,000 to $30,000, and ensure it is periodically adjusted for inflation in the 119th Congress. Updating this threshold will protect privacy, reduce compliance costs, and realign the threshold with Congressional intent. “When Congress passed the Bank Secrecy Act of 1970, they did so with the clear intent to monitor significant and unusual financial transactions. Due to the forces of inflation, the $10,000 threshold that the Department of Treasury implemented in the 1970s is now grossly outdated and captures millions of commonplace transactions, like used car purchases and small business cash deposits. It is imperative that Treasury updates these BSA thresholds to meet the realities of the 21st Century. - Extends the three-year period for receiving a refund or credit when the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) automatically extends a filing deadline due to a natural disaster, to ensure that the IRS deadline extension does not shrink a taxpayer’s ability to claim a refund or credit. Additionally, this bill ensures that the automatic IRS payment deadline is extended to match any disaster-based filing deadline extension.
| Fraud Alert Friday: DOGE sounds alarm on Social Security numbers given to ‘voting’ noncitizens | In case you missed it, "Fraud Alert Friday" highlights waste, fraud, and abuse occurring across the federal government. Alert: Department of Government Efficiency leaders Elon Musk and Antonio Gracias raised concerns over a surprising increase in the number of Social Security numbers issued to noncitizens. They unveiled the startling findings during a presentation in Wisconsin. Musk and Gracias showcased a “mind-blowing” chart highlighting the dramatic rise in SSNs granted to noncitizens. The revelations came during a town hall in Wisconsin. Musk used the opportunity to reveal some shocking statistics about the Social Security system. - Prevents payment processors from requiring firearm retailers to use a distinct MCC that differentiates gun and ammunition sellers from general merchandise and sporting-goods stores.
- Bans financial institutions from assigning a separate MCC for firearm retailers.
- H.R. 2570 – Iran Maximum Pressure Act (Rep. Nunn, R-IA)
- Imposes the toughest sanctions package against Iran in history.
- H.R. 2574 – No Iranian Energy Act (Rep. Pfluger, R-TX)
- Expands sanctions on Iraq if they continue to import natural gas from Iran.
- H.R. 2575 – To provide for the recission of certain waivers and licenses relating to Iran (Rep. Pfluger, R-TX)
- Rescinds several waivers and licenses provided to Iran. The Trump administration has already rescinded some of these waivers. The administration communicated to Iran that it would rescind others if Iran declines to engage in nuclear talks.
- Rep. Hudson (R-NC) letter to the Federal Communications Commission Chairman Carr on broadcast ownership regulations
- Urges the FCC to review broadcast ownership regulations that originated in the 1940s and remain largely untouched since the 1990s.
