Dear John,

According to the President, Wednesday was “Liberation Day,” but from my perspective, Wednesday was a complete disaster for American family farmers, producers, businesses and consumers.

These on-again-off-again, across-the-board tariffs are causing uncertainty and making it impossible for family farmers and business owners to plan. Yesterday, the stock market had its worst day in years.

Targeted tariffs are one thing. They can be an effective tool when used sparingly, but this week’s announcement of 10% tariffs on all U.S. trading partners is irresponsible and will result in higher prices for American businesses and consumers. Not to mention it will damage our relationships with allies we rely on for markets.

The 25% tariff on automobiles has already negatively impacted Minnesotans. 630 steelworkers in our state were recently fired because of the tariffs on steel, aluminum and cars. Just yesterday, automaker Stellantis announced they’re laying off 900 employees across the Midwest as a result of the President’s new tariffs.

Our trade policies should be putting workers and families first. Increasing input costs, shutting farmers out of export markets and causing the middle class to pay more at the grocery store is not a winning strategy.

The President promised to lower costs on day one – and he’s done the opposite of that. I really don’t think this is what his voters voted for.

I’ll keep doing everything I can to support Minnesotans impacted by this reckless trade war and standing up to this administration when the policy is wrong for us.

Here’s what else I was up to this week:

Reforming Washington

Members of Congress are elected to serve their constituents, not profit from their positions. This week, I reintroduced my HUMBLE Act to stop Members of Congress from trading stocks or serving as lobbyists.

You can read more about my HUMBLE Act here

Being honored by the James Beard Foundation

This week, I met with the James Beard Foundation, who informed me that I have been named a 2025 James Beard Foundation Impact Honoree. What an honor!

As the granddaughter of a farm foreman and the top Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee, I’m committed to supporting the farmers, producers and small businesses who feed the world. Together, we’ll keep working to ensure every American can put food on the table.

You can read more about the award and find the whole list of honorees here.

Fighting for our students and educators

As a mother whose child benefited from special education, I know firsthand just how life-changing these programs can be. I introduced a bipartisan bill this week that will fully fund special education programs and ensure MN's special educators and paraprofessionals have the resources they need.

You can read more about my IDEA Full Funding Act here.

I also sat down with University of Minnesota President Rebecca Cunningham to talk about the importance of protecting our students and the cutting-edge research they’re doing at the U.

Hosting my office’s first mobile office hours

This week, my office hosted its first mobile office hours of the year in Burnsville. Members of my staff were available to answer questions and help constituents open a case. It was a great success! Stay tuned for details on our next session.

And if you need help with a federal agency in the meantime, call my casework team at (651) 846-2120.

Behind the scenes:

Last weekend, the cherry blossoms hit peak bloom in DC! Spring may come a little later in Minnesota, but when it does, it’s just as beautiful.

For now, I hope you enjoy these photos of the cherry blossoms around the nation’s capital.
