4.  Reminder to U.S. taxpayers abroad: File tax return by June 16

U.S. taxpayers who work and live outside of the U.S. must file their 2024 federal income tax return by June 16. This deadline applies to both U.S. citizens and resident aliens abroad, including those with dual citizenship. Taxpayers who can’t meet the June 16 due date can request an automatic extension to Oct. 15. This is an extension of time to file, not an extension to pay. The fastest and easiest way to get an extension is to request it electronically. Several electronic filing options are available. Visit Get an Extension to File Your Tax Return for details.

5.  Tax relief available for storm victims in additional West Virginia counties

West Virginia victims of the severe winter storm beginning Feb. 15 now have until Nov. 3 to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. The IRS is offering relief to any area designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Initially, this included Greenbrier, Lincoln, Logan, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Monroe, Summers, Wayne and Wyoming counties. The same relief is now available to Boone and Raleigh counties. Any subsequent counties added to the disaster region will be eligible for the same assistance. The current list of qualified localities is always available on the Tax relief in disaster situations page on IRS.gov.

6.  News from the Justice Department’s Tax Division

A Michigan federal judge ordered a permanent injunction against a group of Detroit-area tax return preparers, prohibiting them and their places of business from preparing federal tax returns for others. The complaint claims that that the defendants used a variety of schemes to improperly reduce their customers’ tax liabilities or to obtain tax refunds to which the customers were not entitled.
