President's Message

Let's put school nurses on center stage; mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 7, 2025 - National School Nurse Day (SND)!

SND is an excellent opportunity to highlight the role of school nurses in the health and education of children. "Investing in school nursing is not only about fostering a healthier future for children, but also strengthening communities for generations to come." Dickson E, Cogan R, Gonzalez-Guarda RM. Role of School Nurses in the Health and Education of Children. JAMA Health Forum. 2025;6(1):e250116. doi:10.1001/jamahealthforum.2025.0116

We have created a toolkit with simple ways to spread the word at schoolnurseday.org, including:

  • A poster to display at your school to celebrate you, the leader who bridges health care and education.
  • Social media messages and images that you can share. Your voice matters!
  • The National Proclamation to request public recognition from local government officials.

This is your time to be seen and "toot your own horn," let everyone know what you are doing and why, and lift other school nurses.

April is Medicaid Awareness Month | Federal Funding for Medicaid Is at Risk

The relationship between Medicaid and school nurses is significant, and cuts to Medicaid will jeopardize school health programs, student health, and learning. Medicaid Awareness Month is the perfect time to highlight the services and benefits the program provides and those covered. Healthy Schools Campaign and its partners released a New Report: How Medicaid Cuts Will Harm Students & Schools. Among the findings, 80% of respondents said that if Medicaid is cut, their school district would reduce specialized instructional support personnel, including school nurses, school psychologists, speech-language pathologists, and occupational and physical therapists.

Related Resources:

  • NASN advocates for sufficient funding to ensure school nurses are present in every school in the country and proposes several policy changes and legislative efforts to Simplify Medicaid Billing Processes.
  • NASN is gathering input from school nurses to better understand how Medicaid is used in schools, districts, and states—and how potential funding cuts could impact school nursing services. Your insights are vital in helping us advocate for policies that protect student health. Please take a few minutes to complete this short survey.

Managing Chronic Health Conditions

Improve the Health and Quality of Life for Students With Asthma

The school nurse promotes students' understanding of asthma, including identifying triggers and symptoms and correctly using medication to self-manage their disease. NASN's School Nursing Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline: Students with Asthma reflect the School Nursing Practice Framework foundational principle of standards of practice and the practice principles of care coordination, leadership, quality improvement, and community/public health. The guideline and implementation toolkit provide the school nurse with a road map for the care of the student with asthma to ensure supportive, safe, and healthy environments that enable students to be fully engaged in managing their chronic disease.
