Dear Friends,

We are writing to invite you to join NRCAT for the launch of our 2025 “how to” webinar training series for faith advocates. We will be kicking off the series with a webinar, “How to Become a Lifeline,” on Wednesday April 9 from 12-1:15pm ET/ 9-10:15am PT.

Register here and join us to learn about how you can partner with NRCAT to correspond with those currently enduring the torture of solitary confinement through a national pen pal program developed by Solitary Watch called Lifelines to Solitary.

Speakers will include:

• Marlies Talay, the founder and project coordinator of Lifelines to Solitary at Solitary Watch.

• NRCAT’s U.S. Prisons Program Director, Johnny Perez, who is also a survivor of solitary confinement.

• Rev. Wilma Reichard, an ordained United Church of Christ minister who spent much of her ministry in hospital and hospice chaplaincy. She has participated in Lifelines since 2017.

• NRCAT’s Director of Faith and Community Engagement, Laura Markle Downton will be moderating.

Over the last decade, Solitary Watch has grown the Lifelines to Solitary program to reach people in solitary using their list of more than 4,500 people in long-term isolation. Learn how your faith community can provide a spark of human connection by becoming a lifeline -- register to join us on April 9th!

In an age of electronic communications, letters remain the main way to penetrate the hidden world of solitary confinement. In this webinar, you will hear from presenters with first-hand experience about the profound impact of sending and receiving mail with those who are incarcerated in solitary confinement. This communication has the potential to transform the lives not only of the individuals in solitary, but of those on the outside who bear witness to their resilience and humanity.

We look forward to learning together on April 9th!

The NRCAT Team
