Federal housing support stands at a crossroads for thousands of Pittsburgh-area residents as the Trump administration plans to slash the Department of Housing and Urban Development workforce by half.

The county’s housing authority sees uncertainty about federal support as another reason to wean tenants off of public housing and make more households self-sufficient.  “Let's see how many people we can get off of affordable housing,” said Rich Stephenson, executive director of the  Allegheny County Housing Authority. “How many people can use Section 8 as a stepping stone to get off the program?”
