On March 25, President Trump issued an Executive Order that would impose federal executive branch control over voter registration and state laws governing our elections, resulting in the disenfranchisement of millions of voters. This action by the President violates both Article I of the Constitution and the Voting Rights Act.
Now Congress is set to vote TOMORROW on the so-called “SAVE” Act, which would disenfranchise millions of voters by codifying many of the same provisions of the Executive Order into federal election law. Specifically, the bill would require documented proof of citizenship each time a voter registers—and heavily restrict what documents can be used. Many Minnesotans, including young people, older adults, married people who have changed their name, trans people, adoptees, and people whose driver’s licenses don’t yet meet REAL ID standards would find it exceedingly difficult, if not impossible, to meet the standards laid out by the bill.
We need our lawmakers to put everything they can into stopping this bill from passing—and stand up to prevent enforcement of the President’s order. |
