Dear Friend,
“Within a week of being home with my son, I sank into a depression unlike any I’d ever known."
–Cassie
Like so many MomsRising members that we hear from, Cassie is not alone. Maternal mental health conditions are common, and our country needs resources, like the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline, to continue to help birthing people and their families. [1]
Click here to urge Congress to continue supporting resources for maternal mental health.
Cassie is part of the group of 1 in 5 women who struggle with maternal mental health disorders like depression or anxiety in the U.S. [2] When maternal mental health disorders are not diagnosed and not treated, these conditions can lead to more serious health issues for the birthing person, their infant, and family. [3] Sadly, maternal mental health disorders are the leading cause of preventable maternal deaths. [4]
Like many people in the United States, moms are also in need of mental health care, and it is vital that we urge lawmakers to fund resources like the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline.
Demand that our leaders ensure all moms have access to the mental health supports they need.
Providers also need support to help new moms experiencing mental health conditions. Programs like the Perinatal Psychiatry Access Program (funded through the State Maternal Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders Program) provide education, consultation, and resources to healthcare providers who support mothers struggling with mental health. [5]
We must do better for families—the cornerstones of our communities, our economy, and our nation by prioritizing the health of mothers.
Together we can, and must, do better for moms, babies, families, and our communities.
