Dear John,

ICYMI, Health Affairs produced a special four-part podcast series to compliment the April theme issue's focus on the intersection of food, nutrition, and health.

In the first episode, Health Affairs' Ellen Bayer speaks with Na'Taki Osborne Jelks from Spelman College on the topic of water insecurity.

Data is the cornerstone of public health policy. The insights provided guide efforts in decision-making processes, allocation of resources, and the planning of effective interventions.

However, there remain data disparities for segments of the population.

In a Health Policy brief released today, Franz Castro and coauthors discuss how improving state-level disability data is a necessary step for advancing health equity.

Through their research, the authors note:

  • To improve disability data level at a state level, they recommend using a minimum, standardized set of questions that assess disability as a core demographic element.
  • By incorporating diverse data sources, this allows for the examination of intersectional disparities for people with disabilities from other historically marginalized groups.
  • At both state and federal levels, there is a need to strengthen regulations around disability data and establish funding mechanisms for disability data collection.
