John,
On Tuesday, President Trump issued an Executive Order that would illegally impose federal control over voter registration and state laws governing electoral processes which would result in the disenfranchisement of millions of voters.
This action by the President—which clearly violates both Article I of the Constitution and the Voting Rights Act—makes it more clear than ever that the endgame of this movement is to upend American democracy as we know it. His order is part of a larger national agenda to restrict democracy that includes banning and rolling back ranked choice voting, one of the most promising reforms to make our electoral system stronger and more, not less, inclusive.
Last week, Wyoming and West Virginia both passed laws banning the use of RCV in local elections. They became the twelfth and thirteenth states in the country to have done so, with at least four more states poised to join them by the end of the year. And in light of the President’s Executive Order, it is also possible that he or Congress will attempt a direct attack on RCV at the federal level.
From Minnesota to Alaska to Utah to Maine, the progress our movement to expand RCV has made in recent years has not gone unnoticed by dark money anti-democracy groups. And we in Minnesota aren’t safe: earlier this year, a handful of legislators in the Senate and House introduced a bill that would ban ranked choice voting in Minnesota . While our pro-RCV legislators have been able to block it from a hearing so far, the energized anti-democracy movement behind it is showing no signs of slowing down.
We’ve been able to hold back their Minnesota efforts so far by defeating RCV repeal attempts in Minnetonka and Bloomington. But those victories can be reversed if a ban bill moves forward.
That’s why we must act now. We need to raise $5,000 before the end of the month to ensure we have the resources to protect RCV at the legislature, elect democracy champions, and stop the growing attacks on our voting rights. Every dollar counts in this fight.

As the federal government and many states intensify their crackdown on voting rights, it is critical that Minnesota remain a leader in democracy reform.
Thank you for your persistence and advocacy in protecting and advancing RCV in our state.
