As students transition from high school to postsecondary opportunities, and as institutional leadership and support staff design policies and programs, access to data is essential. Policymakers, education officials, institutional decisionmakers, workforce providers, counselors, students, and families alike need clear, timely data to make informed decisions.
Right now, state data systems, postsecondary institutions, and state agencies all collect information within a variety of different data systems—but these systems do not currently serve people as well as they should.
Our latest resource ([link removed]) is a comprehensive landscape of the data ecosystem related to postsecondary access, completion, and return on investment. It unpacks current data challenges, leaders’ data needs, and shares actions states can take to improve their SLDSs and use data to support students navigating postsecondary transitions. Key insights from this report include:
* The existing postsecondary and workforce data landscape varies from state to state, and postsecondary education and workforce data systems can differ substantially;
* Some states are taking steps to use the data available to them to support postsecondary access, completion, and ROI; and
* States can and should take action to support postsecondary access, completion, and ROI.
When state leaders prioritize bringing data together within statewide longitudinal data systems (SLDSs), they can create tools to facilitate and support students as they navigate postsecondary and workforce pathways. To meet these goals, states must go beyond tinkering at the margins and make transformative changes that ensure that the state data ecosystem—and most importantly the SLDS—can support postsecondary access, completion, and ROI.
