Friend — just days after appointing former lumber executive Tom Schultz as the Forest Service Chief, Trump signed a series of executive orders that fast-track lumber production in national parks and on public lands.

Deforestation already contributes significantly to the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. If allowed to take effect, these orders could massively increase those emissions — while also polluting our water and harming vital wildlife habitats.

These executive orders are horrible news for our climate, our communities, wildlife, and public lands. If enacted, they would:

• Escalate deforestation in the U.S., while increasing climate and health-harming emissions. Studies suggest that the carbon footprint of this logging could be comparable — or even worse — than the carbon footprint from wildfires.
• Remove millions of acres of trees that absorb carbon emissions and precipitation. Trees play a crucial role in mitigating climate change and in the water cycle. Scaling up deforestation to the degree Trump is proposing in his executive orders would devastate efforts to reduce carbon emissions and protect communities from flooding and mudslides.
• Gut protections for wildlife and public lands access. Trump’s executive orders ignore the Endangered Species Act and other environmental protections, sidestepping regulations that safeguard critical ecosystems and wildlife in favor of corporate profits.

Like many of Trump’s executive orders, these deforestation executive orders are vulnerable to public outcry. And we intend to kick up a storm of opposition. We know we can win.
