Women Who are Making an Impact
 Focusing on Women’s Health
Michigan women deserve to feel comfortable asking questions and seeking support. Together, Halle Berry, Dr. Pauline Maki, and I discussed what we can do to ensure women and girls have the answers and care they need.

This insightful discussion reminded me that Michigan succeeds when women are able to stand in their truths and lead with their authentic selves. I am proud of what Halle has accomplished, and I am inspired to continue prioritizing women’s healthcare here in Michigan.
 Protecting Health Care
Republicans in Congress are rushing to terminate healthcare for families who rely on Medicaid in Michigan. Statewide, Medicaid covers 2.8 million people: 1 million kids, 300,000 with disabilities, 168,000 seniors, and 820,000 people in Healthy Michigan.

Last week, I sat down with Rep. Debbie Dingell to talk with patients, nurses, and doctors about how we can advocate for smart policy to protect the health of all Michiganders. Thank you to Rep. Debbie Dingell for your leadership on this issue.
Telling the Story of Detroit Women
Tiff Massey’s art is unmistakably Detroit. Bold, innovative, and deeply rooted in the city’s history and culture. I had the pleasure of talking to Tiff at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) and visiting her installation, 7 Mile + Livernois.

Tiff Massey’s work puts Detroit’s community, pride, and innovation front and center. Thank you, Tiff, for walking me through 7 Mile + Livernois, and if you haven’t been, go see it now through May 11th at the DIA.

Inclusivity in State Government
Michigan women bring a broad and profound diversity of lived experiences and expertise to all aspects of our lives. That’s why we’ve ensured they are represented throughout my administration and in state government.
Two-thirds of my office and cabinet are women or people of color. I have appointed more than 1,280 women to boards, commissions, and full-time positions. Over 60% of appointees and 70% of judges appointed are women or people of color.
Created in 1968, the 15-member Michigan Women's Commission recognizes women's accomplishments and contributions to Michigan, shines light on critical problems confronting women, and helps create effective solutions to the unique problems that women residing in Michigan and beyond face.
If you are interested in making your voice heard by contributing to a state board or commission, review our current Appointments openings and apply at www.michigan.gov/appointments.
I encourage all Michiganders to bring their talent and perspective to state government and apply for an appointment to a statewide board or commission.
 Standing Up for Reproductive Rights
Over the last few years, we’ve made a lot of progress to protect every Michigander’s fundamental right to make their own decisions about their own bodies and their ability to decide when, how, or if they want to start a family in Michigan.
We repealed an extreme 1931 law that banned abortions without exceptions for rape or incest and criminalized doctors and nurses for doing their jobs. I signed the Reproductive Health Act, repealing TRAP laws and enacting commonsense changes to protect reproductive health and freedom. And we passed a law hindering employers from discriminating against women because they’ve had an abortion.
Last year, I signed the Michigan Family Protection Act, a package of commonsense, long-overdue changes to repeal Michigan’s ban on surrogacy, protect families formed by IVF, and ensure LGBTQ+ parents are treated equally under the law. I announced a new program, Take Control of Your Birth Control, to ensure Michiganders have access to free contraception which will lower the cost of family planning and keep people healthy. And through my new budget proposal, we are working to invest in Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies.
I will keep fighting like hell to protect reproductive freedom in Michigan and make our state the best place to start, raise, and grow your family.
