Trump’s attack on major law firms that have represented his opponents or worked on prosecutions against him needs to be recognized for what it is – another threat to our democracy.
Think about it. He is trying to get major law firms to:
- Fire attorneys who worked on cases against him.
- Eliminate their firm’s DEI programs.
- Throw millions in pro bono legal services at his pet causes, like representing insurrectionists.
- And tacitly agree to not bring cases against him or his administration’s blatantly illegal agenda.
If they don't comply, they’ll be stripped of their government contracts and security clearances and be barred from federal buildings. That could destroy some firms, and the Washington Post reports that it is already making it harder for people hurt by Trump's policies to get representation.
One brave young lawyer, Rachel Cohen, recently resigned from her firm in protest, telling her bosses, "If being on this career path demands I accept that my industry—because this is certainly not unique to this firm—will allow an authoritarian government to ignore the courts, I refuse to take it any further. As I have said before, others stand to lose far, far more than a paycheck."
The public has unique leverage here to support those fighting to do the right thing from the inside. Law firms aren't used to fielding phone calls and emails about their policies.
Will you call on law firms in Trump's crosshairs NOT to surrender to Trump? Click here for phone numbers and a script or click here to email a letter to them.
Thanks for fighting strongly in this moment.
