Dear friends,
It has been a while since I have written to you from here. So much has happened.
Over the last two months, we have witnessed rapid and relentless efforts to undermine our constitutional system of government and our Constitution itself. From the Congress to the courts, the Trump administration has undermined the fundamental checks and balances of our system of government in an effort to expand the power of the president beyond recognition and to implement dangerous, divisive policies. From executive orders and actions encouraging lawlessness, eviscerating progress for all Americans, and abandoning our allies and our leadership in the world, we see the harms unfolding every day. We also see that we must meet this moment—in Congress, in the courts, and in our communities.
With so much happening, I am sure you are getting news from many reliable sources, and I hope you are subscribed to my official email report about what is happening each week that I am in Washington.
As important partners in the work of informing and mobilizing people in our community and beyond, I want to share a few thoughts with you here about what we can and must do to meet the moment and how I am working through this campaign to do so.
We must fight these efforts in Congress. With Republicans in charge of the House and the Senate, Congress has not fought the Trump administration’s efforts to undermine Congress’ constitutional authority or implement dangerous policies. From where I sit, it appears that House Republicans are not merely failing to object, they are actively and enthusiastically supporting these efforts: handing over Congress’ power of the purse, ditching legislation that does not please Elon Musk, and refusing to do oversight of the administration. So, how do we fight in Congress? Democrats in the House are working together to expose and defeat dangerous legislation, sound the alarm, hold the administration accountable through the tools we have, and to win back the House.
We must fight these efforts in the courts. Courageous citizens and lawyers are fighting the administration in the courts, filing more than 110 cases to date against the Trump administration’s harmful actions. And they are winning. In many of these cases courts have issued orders stopping these harmful actions—some temporary and some final. These cases are important to protecting the constitution and the people of this country. As a former courtroom lawyer, I am glad to put my experience to work as a member of the House Democrats’ Litigation Task Force, where we are monitoring and assisting in these efforts as we can.
We must fight these efforts in our communities. People across our communities are deeply concerned about what is unfolding—from the lawlessness of pardoning felons and making our communities less safe, to the recklessness of freezing government funding for programs of all kinds our communities rely on (from HeadStart to health research), to the mindlessness of mass firing of government employees who protect our nuclear weapons, keep us safe when flying, monitor our air and water, care for our veterans, and ensure people receive the benefits they have earned. As a community, we need to inform our neighbors about what these drastic cuts mean for our community and mobilize people to respond. Team Lizzie is here to support that effort.
I cannot overstate how important it is that we win the 2026 midterm elections and take back the House of Representatives. It won’t change everything, but it will change some things. And it is critical to bringing back the checks on the administration that have vanished in the last two months and putting us back on a path to progress.
In the months ahead, you will hear from me in these emails about the political side of my work, as you have in years past, as well as how you can help. I am committed to working with TX07 volunteers year‑round to inform and mobilize people in our district and across our community. We are keeping our campaign office open year‑round for organizing and engagement activities.
There are many things you can do to help, and many ways to get involved:
- Volunteer! You have heard and will continue to hear that you can volunteer with the campaign. In the past we’ve included a “volunteer” button in emails a little closer to each election day, but our campaign team is working now to turn community concerns into action and help you connect with meaningful opportunities to volunteer.
- Inform! Use your voice to educate and inform people across the community. Write letters to the editor or op-eds. In TX07, we have many papers published daily, weekly, and monthly. Share your thoughts about why what’s happening in Washington (and elsewhere) matters and encourage people to engage on the issues.
- Engage! Make sure elected officials, including me, hear from you about the issues that matter to you by emailing, calling, or sending in letters.
- Contribute! You have heard from me for years—and as you might expect, you will continue to hear—that you can support this political effort with a financial contribution. That is still true, and will remain true. This campaign will be important to the effort to win back the House and to mobilize voters in TX07 that will be critical in the 2026 midterm election.
These are difficult days. There is no doubt about that. When I think about the challenges ahead, I find it helpful to think about how we met those challenges before.
Eight years ago, at the beginning of the first Trump administration, I was so deeply concerned about what was happening that I decided to put my name on the ballot and run against my member of Congress who was enabling and encouraging President Trump’s dangerous agenda. Together, we put together an incredible coalition that flipped TX07 from red to blue in 2018, that held on to it against the headwinds of 2020, and that has worked in every election to help elect not just me but other leaders we need and deserve.
We know how much is at stake. We also know how much we can do when we work together.
Together, we can do anything,
